So My wheel bearing is starting to go and im wondering if anyone's managed to pull out their own without taking the axle out...i havent really looked yet but if anyone has taken it out without removing the axle what kind of socket or wrench did you use...(not size but kind (swivel, open end wrench))...
thanks for the help...:nut:

Rear end wheel bearing? you dont have to remove the axle, you have to remove the whole hub assembly, its a press in and out bearing, meaning you need a press for both getting it out, and getting the new one in

For the front. It's a 30mm bolt. You remove the wheel hub along with the bearing that is pressed into it. (like as stated above).

For the rear. It's a 36mm bolt. Remove the brake caliper, rotor. Then you must undo 4 bolts that hold the wheel bearing on the car. The hub is pressed into the rear bearing. You must then pull the hub and bearing off the rear axle.

I just finished doing 5 bolt axle swap along with VLSD install. Used a 36mm shallow socket 3/4" drive. Along with a 3/4" to 1/2" adapter. And a 25 inch breaker bar.

thanks for the info... were u able to slide a socket in to remove the 4 bolts in the back of the hub though without popping the axle off? i got the whole bearing assembly so i dont think i would need a puller to pop it out would i?

you do not have to press the shit out.

http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?p=2004197#post2004197

just pull off the everything but you lower control arm bolt. and hammer the fucking shit out. I have extras at my house :)

let me know

36 mm for the rear axel bolt. then you pull the suspension off with a 19mm. then you take a electric impact to the rear 4 hub bolts and take a hammer and bang that shit out.

Notice how a guy in that forum said "i hammered mine out, dont do that"

theres two ways of doing things, the backyard way (wrong, especially when there is places like UWRENCH)

and the right way according to the FSM.

if he is replacing OLD FUCKED Up bearings then why not hammer them out!!!!! the backyard method works just fine if you are replacing broken bearings. Go on Zilvia and search how many people have done that method. I don't know what you expect to do with your old bearings...

well i got the puller n all, i mean, i got all the tools i need for the job...apprentice at sait:nut: ..anyway i wont be using the bearing so y not just hammer it out... looked at it today n dont see how a socket would fit there with the axle in the way of the 4 bolts in the back though

Thanks for all the info

Go ahead, hammer it OUT, how do you get the new one in? hammer it? yes, you CAN do it that way, but a press is less invasive on the bearing, you could do potential damage with a hammer in my opinion. Again, opinions are like assholes, everybody has one, weather you choose to take my advice or not is your choice. U- wrench will let you use a press if you talk to dave nicely, prolly cheap or FREE.

On teh side, are you in sait right now? im in second year welding, in the thomas riley building (=

well i thought it was an assembly... so even if i get the 4 bolts out in the back its still pressed in? damn... ok if i do it that way then i'd have to take the knuckle out n press it out then press the new one in... damn... i added some pics of the part that i got from a friend with a 240sx... got the 5 lug pattern bearings as well but no rims so ill wait till i have more $...

Im starting second year in the fall...

yes, because when you take the 4 bolts off, you are removing the hub assembly, which is the bearing that the cv sits in, as well as your splines, and your hub that your lug nuts are on. If you have a whole new hub assembly, you dont need to press anything, just bolt the new one in. if not , what you need to do is press the bearing out of the hub assembly, and then press the spline/lugnut part out of the bearing, then backwards of removal. Download the s13 fsm, it will show you, i just looked in mine and thats what it reccomends. Do you really want to chance shocking the insides of the bearings hammering the new one back in? Using a drift or not, you are stil introducing a sudden load to the bearing repeately, vs a press putting a constant unshocked load to it. Make sense?

im not saying you have to press the hub assembly out once you get the 4 bolts off, it should just come out, im saying that usually the dealer sells the BEARING itself, not the hub assembly, so you need to do the pressing, as the FSM clearly illustrates

So now my car is PARKED literally,...i was just gonna drive it like that tomorrow n just wait to do the 5lug conversion but my neighbour insisted that he could get it out in 5 mins... BACKYARD MECHANIC...i cant stress that out enough!!:banghead: so he tries to loosen the axle by pounding the shit out of it then he takes off... n now the nut wont even screw back on...tried grinding a taper onto the axle threaded end n still nothing...fuck ...

:( backyard eh....no good, mushroomed the top of the axle no doubt...stupidass. Youll need a 180sx axle or a silvia axle because their LSD is 5 bolt, as opposed to our 6 bolt.

francisc006

....i went down to uwrench n dave helped me out a bit grinding off some threads n getting a new nut in there but the axle hasnt seated properly cuz the nut wont turn anymore...so i got some play in my rear wheel but at least ill still be able to go to the cruise...jdm tunners said they'll hook me up with a axle monday :)...

BTW i want to thank everyone for all the help
