That would mean that on average every person owns 2.5 cars  What about all the people under 16 that don't own any and all the really old people

I think 2.5 million is high unless you are including commercial vehicles. Even then it might be high. I'd be interested to find out though.

Statistics Canada (http://www40.statcan.ca/l01/cst01/trade14c.htm) says the whole of Alberta only has 3,855,874 vehicle registrations for 2007, of which only 2,751,165 are passenger vehicles.

So I'd guess the average is more like 1.2~1.3 cars per Calgarian, if not less.

I would be surprised if there was more than 1 million non-commercial vehicles in Calgary. Sure, most households have more than 1 vehicle, but they also have kids. An average family of 4 will have 2 cars. Not to mention students, retirees, etc. who don't. I think they more than offset the few who have multiple cars for 1 person.

what about the people that own more than 3 cars...
the extra 500,000 would make up for that

^^ maybe a family has 3 cars, how many individuals have 3.

That means a family with a mom, dad, and 1 kid driver would have 9 cars then.

I would assume 750,000 would be a good guess

^^ yeah but there are maybe 1,000 people in calgary who collect cars to that level.

There are 150,000 people in calgary living in poverty. They balance it out I think

very true.
Even families with all kids over 16 have just about 4-5 cars if the have more than 2 kids.

I own three right now myself. But then, I'm in a bit of a "transition" phase, waiting for at least two of them to sell.

But what about all the cars sitting in car dealerships? Are we talking about registered active cars or just cars in general?

But that doesn't include all the OOP cars. There's plenty of OOP cars that nobody wants to get inspected and registered in Alberta.

I heard once that Calgary has the second largest cars per capital in North America, first is L.A. This was a couple years ago mind you, but it wouldn't surprise me.

registered active cars, the province would know nothing about the number of cars sitting in dealerships, peoples back yards, on the road even unless they are registered. There are alot more than 3 and a half million cars in the province. That being said when I used to work in a corporate office it was amazing how many people either didn't have a car of shared 1 car between 2 people. Consider yourself lucky if you have more than 1 car.
