How far has anyone gone after the E light comes on??
When I had my 2000 Civic, I put nearly 650km on combined city/highway driving when I used to work in Airdrie. Filled it up with just over 44L. Tank capacity is supposed to be 45L.

I miss great fuel mileage.

lol I used to do it all the time when I was a youngin and gas money was a luxury....nowadays dont really have the balls to....I would like to with a gas can in the car though.

Took my dads 530i till it was flashing like 6-7km on the range....about 700km..got pretty scared haha

I have no idea how many after the light comes on, but I've had more than one occaision (because of unusual traffic), that put me in the "less than a litre left" category, when I filled up.

I have had my 'KM's till empty' read: ---- one time, I was not a happy camper. Same as above, forced to because of traffic.

My old diesel smart had the "low fuel warning" display when there was 5L left in the tank. That doesn't sound like much, but when I averaged 4.1 L/100km, that's enough to do 120 km.

Couple that with the fact that there is a hidden 2L reserve that doesn't show on gauge, you could be driving around for another 50 km after the gauge reads 0.0L.

The furthest I've ever gone with the gas light on was 150km, after that I simply had to fill up. Purging air out of a diesel smart's fuel system so that your car will run again can only be done by the dealership :(

In my old Grand Cherokee during university, I saw 0km to empty a number of times LOL

My logic back then:

Eat....or gas.....hmmmm...pita pit ftw

I've had such low gas in my car so many times that I don't think my gas light is anywhere near accurate anymore. The light comes on and off randomly now when I have more than a quarter of a tank left.

And yea air is always getting sucked out when I go to the gas pump.

Back home I had a Subaru wagon, I've done min 60km's after the light came on almost regularly!!

Although with my Silvia, I'm very hesitant to push my luck... Once the light come's on I usually try and do 20-30 more. I have been averaging 430km/tank though!!

i never ran my old 89 civic hatch with a dohc zc out of gas.
i did make it from ontario to alberta with a $160 total gas cost
(approx 3700km)

iv taken my prelude to about 600... by then it was sitting past the E on the little pin.

it was pretty much right on my tank capacity when i re-filled too

does this remind anyone of that seinfeld episode where kramer goes to test-drive the new car?

I always keep 5L of gas in my car, just in case. The fuel lights are stupid measures, mine fluctuates so much with the hills.

Yep i've been in the 0.5-1L remaining zone many times.

Nowadays i try to fill up with about 1/4 left. i guess having that 1/4 tank left just makes the gas pump kick off sooner so i don't see how much it would really cost to fill the car :(

Multiply the price per litre by the size of your gas tank (in litre's) and you should have a reasonable estimate on what it would really cost to fill your car. This cost should be expected to flucuate (+/-) in direct proportion to the price of gasoline.

take a little 5l jerry can with you in the trunk, and push that son'bitch till she rolls to a stop.

You people realize that the fuel pump is cooled by fuel in the tank so running on empty on a regular basis reduces the life of the pump and the fuel filter since you suck the debris from the bottom of the tank.

...and if you leave the tank empty when it reaches below zero you can get frost built up on the inside of the tank, which turns into water. water in gas tank = bad....but who cares right now. You are ruining the fun Heavyd!

I ran my tank dry on my old Z28 at least 3x.

I eventually had a dead fuel pump which cost me $1200 to replace. Ugh...

The light on my Galant starts to turn on after I'm a little less than 1/4 tank... Annoying as hell.

What if we continuously fill er' up, drive and drive some more until your close to empty/ gas light on then fill er' up and repeat??

Is that proper gas maintenance or should you just fill er' every time it's around 1/4 or less???

Didn't know about the fuel pump, but sucking all the dirt offa the bottom thru your injectors doesn't seem too bright.

Not a good idea to keep a full jerrycan inside your vehicle as it warms up, releases flammable vapors, could leak or explode, etc... just carry an empty one, stop for gas if you think you're gonna run out, or get AMA

I usually try to keep my gas tank as full as possible, but it's also a lot more weight when it's full. I fill it when it gets to about 1/4 to 1/3 of a tank.

haha This reminds me of when I filled up my work truck once on a Friday, then came back to find someone took it out all weekend. On Monday the gas light was on, and I had to be on site in 20 minutes.
I was so mad at the mystery offender, I said 'fuck it' and decided to see how far I'd get. I was positive I would at least make it on site without needing gas. Definitely too stubbornly angry to stop and make sure.

I got 4km before she choked out.
My daily summary was the shortest I'd ever written : "Truck troubles"

Every car I've ever been in has been fairly inaccurate with the "empty" light warning. After the empty light has been on for a while there is still ~10-15L in the tank. Never good to let it get too low though because it sloshes around in the tank and its not good for the pump.

All the cars I've driven have had reserves of about 10% after the light turns on. That's plenty of gas to get to the nearest gas station.

If you're really worried that you won't make it, shut off all your electronics (heater, radio, headlights, etc.). Less back-torque from the alternator = better fuel mileage.

Might as well close your windows too ;) less wind resistance

Haha. That's a good one too. Neutral coasting and drafting help as well. Same with driving 80-90km/h.

Furthest I have gone is somewhere between 600-650. This is highway and city driving combined. This is in a 99 EK

On my 2006 Civic coupe, I've gotten anywhere from 585-650km per tank on numerous occasions consistently and have filled it up usually at $45-48 bucks. Now it's about $50.00.
Both highway and city as well.

I always fill up when I'm at half tank, seems less painful that way.

130 litre tank x 1.46/litre (diesel in Victoria)

=$190 for a tank:eek:

I pushed my mustang to 445 KM in the city, but that was dry, 50L tank and I think I put 49.7L in that day, wasn't even sure if I was going to make it to a nearby gas station haha.

The fuel filter should pick up most of the dirt but depending on the car it can be a major pain to replace as many have banjo bolts and are placed in tough to reach locations.

I've been filling only half a tank too. Require more stops for gas but I'm carrying about 40 lbs less weight. Not a huge diff. Tho I'm sure only filling 1/2 tank would be a bigger impact on SUV/trucks with their massive tanks.

My favorite was driving through Edmonton with the FRS radios on in my 81 (Mk1) Supra.

"Uh...guys, I need to get gas."

"No problem, there's a station a couple kilometers away."

"Uh, no. I mean...you see this? I've got it floored."

...as I jerk along and roll to a stop.

It didn't even have a gas warning light.

My car doesn't have a light that comes on or any sort of warning, I just know when I'm low by looking at how many km's I've driven. Usually I get gas when I'm between 550-600kms on a tank, and that usually ends up taking about 40-45 Litres.

Last week I left the house to drive to the LRT station, and on the way there (AFTER I had passed the gas station that was a minute from my house!) I noticed the gas light and the needle hovering above the 'E' :banghead:

From that point, I drove like a grandma w/ all the electronics off till I could get to the CO-OP down the road

To make matters worse, the f***ing needle kept inching up and down towards the E! :guns:

Next time I fill up the car in the evening LOL...don't have to worry about running out of gas in the middle of the morning rush!

I can't remember how much gas went into the tank when I filled it, I'll have to find the receipt. It was like $52 though!
