View Full Version : Mazda to offer RX-8 buy back

This just in:

Just got a phone call from budaman, who had just got off a conference call with MNAO. Apparently they are revising the RX-8 horsepower figures: the Manual is being revised down 3.6% to 238hp, and the Auto down 4.5% to 197hp.

Anyone who has already purchased an RX-8 will be receiving a letter from Mazda offering two alternatives:

Mazda will buy back the car. (He didn't have the full details - they'll be in the letter.)

Mazda will provide free scheduled servicing for the duration of the standard warranty plus a $500 debit card.

Basically the same deal that they offered after the 2001 Miata was found to be down on power too. Owners will have 30 days to decide.

I hope they stand up to that in canada.
The car is not that bad to drive. Its quick, but not fast.
But the handling is amazing...and the brakes are pretty damn good too.
All that car needs is some more balls...and a different body..lol

In other words, it needs to be an FD and then it would be good car power wise, and looks wise...
I see Panspeed is building a circuit car out of an Rx-8, they are using the peripheral exhaust port and not the renesis port, gee, wonder why that is, rotaries love overlap, the EPA may not, but 13b's do...Maxt

You would have thought that Mazda would actually test the production models and make sure they are making adversited power, epescially after the 155HP Miata incident. Along with the SE-R V-Spec and Tiburion HP plunder. Unless.....they knew it was down on power and hope no one noticed? I notice that the "real world" RX-8 has the same crap fuel economy. What happened to the 25% improvement that Mazda was talking about?

I think it came with 25% more imagination than anything else..maxt

Hmm I wonder if Mazda would pay for a motor swap:D

Seems like a great offer to me.. I would assume that people test drive the cars before paying for them, so really, it is just like getting maintenance for nothing. If I had bought an RX-8, I would definitely sell it back, then buy one of the 'used' ones from the dealers lot and pocket the 3k+.

Yeah, but you have add up the $500 and the maintence for the warranty period which is what is being offered to current owners. It might not add up to the $3K you might get by returning your RX-8 and buying the used RX-8. Plus you know how you treated and broken in your car.

Yeah, you're right.. I am mostly kidding. In any case, it seems like a great deal for the owners to me.

Yeah, I am surprised by how quick Mazda's response was. Probably because there are offering this to only current and owners that have it on delivery, not potential buyers since they will see the revised figures. Minimize who they have to give $500 + maintence to. But still, pretty fast. Don't remember how fast Mazda's turnaround time was with the 155HP Miata deal.

To a current owner that is happy with the car....pretty sweet deal I think. Of course the downside is that Mazda dealers will be working on the car, last I heard don't know the ways of rotaries, hope this has changed with the introduction of the RX-8.

Its rated at 175hp and 181ft-lbs or around there.

Dynos are around 140+hp and 145-150ft-lbs or around there.

How does that compare with others? Car has 6speed and hlsd.

Whatever, dude! If I recall correctly, you're name is ahead of mine on the waiting list. At least yours is paid for and you're just waiting for it to arrive. Me, I only have a deposit down. Might have to forget about that car if I want the Italian convertible I told you about.

Originally it was rated at 180HP. It got knocked down by Nissan after numerous complaints of low power on the dyno. Not a big difference, but I thought I thought I would mention it.

what was the miata rated at? the 155hp one?

Akagi Redsuns
08-25-2003, 07:14 PM
It's the current engine, rated as 142HP, when it came out it was rated as 155HP. Apparently that was supposed to be only a California version, but instead it became the only version. Apparenly all the emissions systems took away the horsepower....good to know it's there when you take the stuff off I guess.

no it didn't....I believe 180hp was just the 'guesstimate' number on the pre-production model. It was revised before any of the first models were ever sold. Its been the same since the first release. Perhaps you confused it with another car?

Akagi Redsuns

Ok, then I was mistaken. I do remember being told it had 180HP when I was looking at buying one....they were out (in the US) and the dealer didn't have any. Probably wasn't told the adjusted HP yet.

Or he just didn't know much. When I was shopping for one, one of the salesguys told me it had 200hp. ha.

yea dont go by salesmans figures mine didnt know the difference between an ser and ser spec v. The dyno numbers are often different on the spec because it has a sensitive knock sensor so i heard from many mags so it is hard to get figures until the sensor is relocated.
