One person is dead after a crash near the Springbank Airport near Calgary.

The accident happened around 10 a.m. on Monday.

Emergency crews from the M.D. of Rocky View rushed to the airport which is 10 km west of Calgary, just north of Highway 1.

There was nothing they could to do help save the victim, who was the only person on board.

Officials say the airplane had just taken off from the airport. Shortly after it left the ground the pilot declared an emergency. A short while later, the plane crashed.

The transportation safety board is on its way to the airport to begin its investigation. They will be trying to determine what caused the small plane to crash.

Heard on the news that it's a self-assemble project plane.

That's freaky. I work at the Calgary Airport and didn't hear anything about it at all.

Worst part is I probably know who responded to the crash. RIP

Haven't heard a name yet, but the plane was a 2008 Comp Air 4. Hopefully it's not your uncle!

RIP. Love flying to that airport, lots of fun. Hard to believe this stuff happens sometimes. Seeing that aviaton is a small community, this will be on a lot of people's minds. Condolences.

My question is, do these planes need to go thru inspections or certifications?

Or can I fly any tin can with wings?

Yes, but the regulations that involve the certifications requirements are VERY lax compared to real aircraft.

Aircraft mechanics have a saying... "home-builts, killing doctors and lawyers since 1952!" (in other words every rich dick thinks he can build and fly his own machine)

Actually, I have always heard that expression applied to The Beechcraft Bonanza.

Not a bad plane (though the early V-tails could be a handful, I hear), but it was just too much airplane for the low time wealthy pilots who liked its style and comfort.

Given the thousands of hours that it normally takes to build a homebuilt, I have talked to more engineers and 'hands on' guys building homebuilts than doctors and lawyers.

Still, homebuilt planes can be scarey buisness. especially when the designs become more complicated. People take risks.

Not to mind according to CTV, that plane was not his. Which means somone else built it. But over 95% of aviation accidents are from pilot error. At least that's what was taught in school.
