Here's the rundown on this completely stock, Alberta car:
The story: I've got two of these, a 95 & this 96. I bought this car 3 months ago, as a major upgrade to my beater 95' GTI. This car has all the features I wanted, and it is in ten times better shape then my 95. I'm very happy with it, but I recently got a good raise at work and decided it's time to move on to something a little newer, so I'm going to keep the 95 as my winter beater and sell the 96 to someone looking to enjoy a solid GTI.
Body is in great shape, underneath there is no rust whatsoever. There are only two places on the car where there is a small amount of surface rust; The hatch (couple spots), and just along the lower edge of the window on the driver's door.
Mechanically the car is in great shape. I had a lot of work done in the last 1000 kms. Including the Alberta Insurance Safety Inspection, which it passed and is now valid for 3 years. Recent work includes (All done at 185,XXX):
Timing Belt
Both Front Wheel Bearings
Both Final Output Seals (On Tranny)
Fuel Filter
Mechanically the car doesn't need anything, but there are a couple small things that I would call imperfections. There are a few rock chips on the hood, both headlights have small cracks but function perfectly and don't burn bulbs out (plus I have two brand new headlights that the P.O gave me), there is a crack on the upper part of the windshield, but it is out of the field of view and attention was not required to pass the safety inspection, it needs the upper trim on both side skirts, and other then that, just the rust that was mentioned above.
