I am looking to unload my very barely used (under 20 shots) Canon kit lenses. How much are they worth?

EF-S 18-55
EF 75-300

I friend of mine picked up a used 75-300 from ebay for 100 bucks or so ... I'll give you 80 if you are interested :)

I'm assuming thats the non IS one btw.

check the buy and sell section on photography-on-the.net or fredmiranda.com for a pretty good idea of values.

The 18-55 kit lens is next to worthless. Canon doesn't even retail it.

You might be able to sell it to someone who damaged their own, but not for very much.

Is the OP's kit 18-55 IS or non IS?? IS would be an easy sell.
Check ebay, there's a couple auctions going for about $20 at the moment. I sold my Pentax kit lens for $60 on eBay last week.

if the 18-55 is an IS, i'd buy it from u...

Non-IS.

I didn't know the lenses were so bad until after I bought the cir-pol and uv filters for them. :banghead:

For that price, I might just disassemble the 18-55 to see what the lenses look like from the inside. $85 for the 75-300 makes me want to keep it in case a hot neighbour moves in across the street.

Advice from the pro's: Which would you pick up first?

17-40 f4.0L
16-35 f2.8L
24-70 f2.8L
24-105 f4.0L IS
Other suggestions?

I'm leaning towards the 24-105 for versatility, plus Canon claims the IS to be effective to 3 stops. This will be used on the 400D.

It all depends on what you like to shoot really. The 24-105 is a good compromise on a crop body but really isn't wide enough and needs to be paired with an ultra wide, like the 10-22 or 12-24 etc. The 17-40 and 16-35 just don't have enough range, and need to be paired with something longer.

And it's been discussed before, but the 18-55 kit lens isn't that bad. It's an excellent budget wide angle, but needs to be used in the right situations. Which typically means outdoors, with lots of light and stopped down to f6.3 or greater. People who bitch and moan are always trying to use it in low light, wide open and not surprisingly get shit for results.

The 18-55 is probably worth about $50.
The 75-300 about $150.

Post them up at $75 for the 18-55 and $200 for the 75-300 on here and on kijiji/craigslist and see what kind of response you get.

18-55 .. still worth $60 - 80 ..

I just bought one .. for $70 .. it is still a good lens for trip .. as many people may hv 30D 40D etc with other bigger and heavier lens ..

IS model worth more .. but it is not important to hv IS at that range :dunno:

Oh shit, my bad, I thought they didn't sell it. Take a look at Canon's 17-85mm USM IS, it's the stock lens for a 40D. Monstrously epic lens.

What price range are you looking at? That's a pretty big range there. Instead of that 80-200, I would try to find a 70-210 f3.5-4.5. Can be had for about the same price used, is faster and great bang for the buck.

None of the above.

By far the best lens for your camera is the 17-55. It's got killer optics and IS, and speed, and is the perfect range at 27-88mm equiv.

17-40 is too short, and not fast, no IS
16-35 is fast, way too short, and really expensive and heavy
24-70 is huge, heavy, not wide enough, quality control is absolute shit (most of them backfocus) and no IS, but it's got speed
24-105 is slow, long reach, wide end sucks balls on a 400D, optics at the wide and tele ends aren't amazing, but has IS.

I have found the image quality and versatility from the 17-55 exceeds all the above lenses on a 1.6 crop format. I've used them all in the pro arena and the 17-55 is my pick.

Your kit 18-55 isn't worth selling. It's a better idea to keep it as a backup, or if you're gonna shoot in a situation where you risk damage.

^^^sorry for the douche questions. The 17-55 IS is THAT much better than the 18-55 IS? What is the difference? The price difference is huge, I'm sure there is a difference, just curious what it is.

Thanks!

Yes, there is a massive difference. The 17-55 has a much larger maximum aperture, better build quality, and faster focusing than the slow 18-55.
