Hey,

Not sure if this ad is for real or not, but there is a guy trying to make $20k off of his GT-R order locally.

http://calgary.en.craigslist.ca/car/723668482.html

Thoughts?

Scam .. :dunno:

So far, every Nissan I have talked to .. they are NOT even ALLOWED to confirm order to anyone yet .. ( if you are the owner dealer, then it is different story .. )

Basically .. all Nissan dealerships ( at least, I know in Alberta and B.C. ) want app. $100K plus for one ..

Yes, Nissan dealers took many deposits and names before .. but not valid anymore ..

Again, you can still walk in to almost any major Nissan dealership, and tell them you are willing to pay ~ $100k .. then you will get the car in Sept/Oct.

So stupid. In over a year, with gas sitting at 1.50-1.80/litre these are going to be sitting on show room floors all over the place. Look what happened with the RX-7, supra, and nsx in the 90's. These cars came out, then oil prices rose and the US fell into a recession, and 10 years of FWD econo-box's followed.

I think if you can afford a $100k car, you don't care about maintenance costs or gas prices.

Anyways, I will e-mail the guy and see what he says...
I am interested in knowing if he actually has an order or what.

I just see those waiting lists dry up pretty quickly once Nissan starts phoning down the lists. I don't see these selling at a premium for very long.

That is the same with any new cars "waiting list"
How many people go into a dealership to look/drive a car with no intent of buying?

Then there are the people that bought something else in the mean time, people that realized they can't afford the car, and all the other reasons.

On a popular car such as the new M3, or GT-R, where there is a waiting list, how many people come into the dealership that actually end up buying one? Less then 5% is my guess. Maybe 1-2 percent.

So I did e-mail the guy asking more info, VIN number etc.
Didn't get a response so I will assume it was either a scam, or the guy doesn't actually have an order and was trying to make money (and order the car after it was sold)

PS: I can still see the ad even though everyone says it's removed

Exactly, the RX-7, Supra and 300ZXTT et al. were "budget near supercars" (at the time) and buyers would've been in a different income bracket than those buying the GTR now. Also, a stronger yen in comparison the the USD meant that these cars were no longer the bargains they were when first introduced.

I know for example that the 300ZXTT entered the US market in the latter half of '89 at ~$30,000 and when it exited in '96 it was approaching $60,000.

The car probably wouldn't have a VIN yet... doesn't mean it isn't a real ad. $20k over is reasonable from what I've been hearing.

If you read it is 20 k over what you buy it for from the dealer so that is not reasonable, and 4 year wait? BS

In 1996, the last model year for the 300ZX, the Twin Turbo retailed for ~$40,000 USD down south and ~$60,000 CDN here.

I can read just fine thank you. From what I've been hearing, a $20,000 premium is on the reasonable side considering others are asking up to $130k ($45k premium). I am well aware of how over-MSRP sales work...

i wonder how long this car would be down in the body shop, if you got into a accident.

I bet waiting for the parts would take forever

For those who can't afford it, yeah, it probably seems a little gay (or sad, whichever).

For those who can afford it, it's simply the free market acting as intended and a way to get what you want, when you want it.

Even if money wasn't an issue I highly doubt I would ever pay over msrp only because I would feel like such an idiot a year later when everyone is buying them for msrp or less and my one year old car is already worth even less. I don't get it.

Unless you knew there was a really short production run and it would be extremely rare then I can understand. But the GTR will only be rare for the first year or so at best.
