89coupe - looks like the exact mirror image of my room when I was there June 2-6 on a conference. Is that Augustus Tower?

I was amused at how the shower, no matter how hot I ran it, didn't fog up any of the mirrors in the bathroom.

Haha no shit. Save your money since you won't spend any time in your hotel. Plus the hookers don't care where you stay either. ;)

Yes the Augustus Tower, we faced the Bellagio.

Did you check out the pool area while you were there?

Here are a few pics, they even had a topless section.:poosie:

have any of you guys ever tried the $20 trick, when checking into the hotel?
for those that dont know, you slip the clerk a $20 bill with your credit card and ask for a complementary upgrade.

At the other end of the price range, and still a great location, the Imperial palace is darned cheap and the rooms are fine.

Possibly the cheapest hotel in vegas is the El Cortez. But it's a terrible location.

No matter where you stay, look into getting your flight and hotel as a package through westjet, expedia, travelocity or something like that. You can save a bundle.

If you book through expedia 9/10 they offer a free room upgrade. But whenever I check in I always ask for a room with a view and any upgrades if possible. Oh, without slipping them a 20...LOL

see, I'd be iffy about staying at the Bally's.. they're the old MGM.. and people died in a fire there.

This time around, I'm selecting my hotel based on the pool. (we're going in oct.. we miss SEMA by a week:() So we're between mandalay bay and Bellagio...

I've stayed at the excalibur, treasure island, the old aladdin, but I have to say... my favorite hotel has been the New York New York, the layout is unique.

i was in LV and stayed at Luxor.... it was pretty damn good since two of my friends were part of the player club and got good rates...flight and hotel came total of 500 or so dollars

we got the tickets before the gas price went up thru the roof...

nice hotel but then again we barely was at the room..only to catch a few hours of wink...then off we go

next year planning on hitting TI for sure...looks pretty good place...or even planet hollywood

have fun!!!

Been four times.

Stayed at Imperial Palace, Flamingo, Luxor, and MGM Grand

Imperial Palace and Flamingo aren't bad if you're looking for a cheap place to crash every night and their location is perfect because you're in the middle of everything.

Luxor wasn't anything special. In fact I wasn't a fan of the sloped roof. It made it difficult to stand by the window and look out but it's still a nice hotel/casino.

MGM Grand was my favorite. Often they have the ability to upgrade you from a standard room to a suite if available. The MGM has the biggest pool complex in Vegas. I think there's 5 pools and there's also a lazy river that goes around the whole pool area. It's great.

Same with me. I was at the very end of the "24th floor"... right next to a suite.

During the event I was there for (user's conference for a software suite used by 9-1-1 centers), we had the pool area reserved for ourselves on one night. No swimming though.. the main pool with the fountain had synchro swimmers dancing around in it and the other one was full of R/C boats you could play with for $1 or something like that. Oh and there was lots and lots of entertainment including these three triplets that are AMAZING violin players (http://www.alizma.com)... :D

It was 37°C or thereabouts when I was there. I rented a convertible on my last day there and drove around southern NV and eastern CA sightseeing and got a wicked bad sunburn on my head & arms. :dunno:

^^ i saw alizma...they were ok... i had no idea they were triplets! lol
if i did, it would have made them better rofl

i stayed at the bellagio a couple of weeks ago, had a view of the fountain, rooms were nice and clean, no complaints!

as soon as i arrived i saw a mega douche with no shirt and just a vest on with a bunch of big ass chains walking through the lobby with some arm candy... then i realized it was chris angel... haha

37 degrees is pretty hot that's for sure.

When I went last July the day before we landed they hit a record of 49 degrees. It was incredibly hot the whole week with average temps at about 43. Was kind of weird coming out of the Rhino at 4am and it still being 30+

I always tell people that the Flamingo is probably the best bet. It's so close to everything; Caesars and Bellagio across the street, Bally's, Paris, Planet Hollywood at the kiddy corner, Harrah's almost next door, and the Barberie Coast (I think it's called Wild Bill's Saloon or something) with their $1 drinks. I've stayed there for at least a night all 3 times I've been.

The Imperial Palace is a little ghetto. DO NOT take any rooms in the back tower. They are disgusting.

Harrah's isn't bad, but I spent maybe a total of 2 hours in my hotel room.

Hooters is a surprisingly average hotel. Expect the usual Hooters cheesiness, but the rooms were nice and it's next to the Tropicana and MGM Grand. Dan Marino's restaurant is in the lobby and their ribs are amazing, and best of all, it's all you can eat.

I actually booked my trip just last week for the Mirage.
I was told they were renovating the rooms there so hopefully I get one of the new ones when I go.

Does slippin a $20 actually work for upgrading the room? lol

Subwoofah
06-30-2008, 10:24 AM
It may or may not work. It depends on how you approach the counter person and how many people are there. If you're polite, courteous, and ASK for a "complimentary" room upgrade, then the agent MIGHT just give you one. Just be ready to be turned down and don't ask for that $20 back lol. If you actually have a good reason (ie; honeymoon, wedding, first timer, etc) tell em cuz that gives them more reason to help you out.

For those of you that have stayed at both the Luxor and the MGM Grand, which do you prefer?

I'm looking at going down there for 8 nights.....

the Luxor is $645 for the 8 nights and the MGM Grand is $840. Both are for the same standard room with a king size bed.

Any reason to pay the extra for the MGM?

Thanks

I haven't stayed in the MGM, but the biggest reason I wouldn't go back to the Luxor is that all the rooms are tinted. I know most hotels have some sort of coloring, but the black tinting made the room feel dull and lifeless to me?
Hotel is rad, but its also further away from everything else compared to the MGM.

I really liked NY, NY and the rooms were decently priced. I go to Vegas for the novelty though, not to live like a baller.

MGM is terrible. overpriced and everything is tacky gold and forest green (like a sport edition early 2000's Dodge Caravan).

I go about 4x a year on work and have stayed in most of the hotels them.

I usually end up staying at the Luxor because they have an 8pm check out (if you request it).

It is really nice to be able to go to the hotel and take a shower and clean up in your room before flying home. (as opposed to changing in the bathroom in the casino after you get your bags from the bellhop).

IMO Belagio & Plams are pretentious and over-rated. Planet Hollywood (the old Alladin) is really nice as is Paris and the Venetian. Truth is we rarely spend time in our rooms when there so kind a waste of $$$.

I go with a local customer of mine that owns a large multi million dollar company and he stays.... at the Flamingo Hilton?!?
Everybody has different tastes and Las Vegas certainly has a hotel that will fit your tastes.

+1 for TI.

Pros:
- Middle of the strip, close to everything, not "stuck" at one end of the strip
- Beside Fashion show mall for those that like to get their shop on
- Found the rates relatively cheap (VERY reasonable) compared to similar rated/star hotels
- Rooms were clean, tidy, only the bath towels looked gross from old stains on them.

But definitely would stay there again, very convenient location! :)

As for the hotels, honestly all of these would be 5 star if they were in Calgary or Edmonton.

The outlets are usually closed Christmas Day.

I go to Primm everytime I'm in vegas, alot of the hotels in vegas have free shuttles out there. They have a good size outlet mall with Coach, Burberry, DC, Fossil (Armani watches), and a bunch others that I can't remember.
When I go to sema I usually stay at caesars or mgm becasue they have sema package deals and a free shuttle to the show. IMO Caeasers is a bit nicer than mgm, especially the pool area but you definatly pay for it. However everytime we have gone to caesers we have been upgraded for free without even asking.

Todai Sushi/Seafood buffet is AWESOME.

All you can eat: giant crab legs, TONS of good sushi rolls, very fresh sashimi, udon noodles, amazing dessert selection, fresh fruit, random "chinese" dishes....

Must try if you like sushi/sashimi.

$24.95 IIRC adult during the week.

Now for the buffett I ended up going to Harrah's becuase they where giving buy 1 get 1 free buffet coupons outside the hotel  . The food selection and quality was good, I didnt eat alot of seafood but the crab legs/claws where great and the gelato was awsome

I stayed at the Mirage for 5 nights and I would deffintly stay there again. Great location, excellent pool and alot of places to eat. Very friendly staff and our room was very nice.

This idea may not be for everyone, but I went down last month and stayed at South Point. It's a few miles south of the strip, so to alleviate the extra distance we rented a car (also gave us a chance to check out Primm, Hoover Dam). After all that drinking, I find your ass is too tired to walk several miles the next day in desert heat. The cost of doing this (hotel + car) was at par with price of hotel for MGM Grand, Luxor, etc. plus gives you the added advantage of a car to drive around. Also, the room/casino was quite nice (plasma tv, in room safe, nice bed linens) and the pool was really nice as well. The hotel has a real cheap liquor shop also! And we got a chance to eat Jack in the Box and Raising Caines Chicken Fingers (both decent fast food outlets).

My first time in Vegas we spent a week there and stayed at Imperial Palace. We didn't rent a car. It was decent, but we had to rent a few taxis and it was more of a burden than anything.

This year in four days I got more done and had a more satisfying trip with renting a car than a week down there my last time before. Just a thought.

After your first trip to vegas, you really seem to get all the crap out of the way and learn what works best for you. I don't mind staying on the strip at a cheaper place (Flamingo is right in the middle and its quite reasonable in all aspects) and I'd just rent a car for a day or two when I wanted to go to Primm or just get off the strip.
I am eager to hit up Togoshi Ramen shop in a few weeks!

just got back from Vegas, stayed at the MGM Grand... booked into the West Wing Room... got to the room after a walk that would not end... room was a mess, so then we went back down... complained, got a discounted room upgrade... upgraded to a suite.. MGM is a massive hotel, LOTS of walking, but awesome suite!

New york is my favorite hotel. Rooms are reasonable pricewise, really nice and always have been clean. Waitresses come the most when you're gambling lower limit tables... and it looks the coolest from the outside haha. I just got back from my third stay there

I've also stayed at the luxor, the black tinted windows made the room feel gloomy, but staying in a pyramid is pretty cool, and the Westin Casuarina (block off the strip). Westin was really nice and allowed dogs (key when I went with the family), but I hate walking to the strip, its dirty, covered in broken glass, used condoms and hooker cards (everything awesome about vegas without the clean up)

So I just got back fron Vegas, stayed at the Trump ( I didn't book it, bosses wife did).I am really not sure how it can be called a 5 star hotel. Sure it was nice to look at, new, shiny, clean, made you feel poor and unwelcome.
But how about the negatives you might ask. No free internet, that's $12 a day, fuck that, we drove to Seattle this summer and in the two weeks every hotel, shithole or not had free wifi. We stayed on the 25th floor and the sound deadening of the windows was equivalent to saran wrap. Every train, cop car, air plane, fart is heard. Mysteriously the shower never seemed to have hot water, luke warm all the time but the jet tub could melt your skin. All in all for what you pay, stay anywhere else on the strip and you are better off since Trump has absolutely no attractions or sister hotels to hook you up.

Impressions of Vegas:

Prostitution is rampant there are hooker cards everywhere and the toothless mexicans handing them out on every corner don't make me want to call them.

The rampant prostitution had me wondering everytime I was in a shop, restaurant, etc if the attractive ladies working there were retired hookers. In a couple places I was certain of it. :)

Many people are on the take, if your cabbie says he knows of a great place to take you. That is because he is being paid to take you there.

It's further than you think, we walked almost everywhere on the strip the first couple days. It's deceiving everything is so big that it doesn't look that far away, it is, take a cab or rent a car. Your legs and feet will thank you tommorow.

Cabbies are paid by the mile not the time, so they love to speed (fine by me) but make sure they aren't taking you for a "ride".

I was absolutely amazed by the number of shows there are to see and big stars who stop through and perform on certain dates. I would suggest trying to plan your trip out ahead of time if you are like me and don't plan on gambling and drinking your face off.

I will edit later, just my two cents.

As far as I know, none of the "BIG" hotels offer free internet.

Yeah, was just there this past week too!

Definitely agree with a lot points here. I was just off the strip beside Bally's. Although it was only a block off the strip, it was a "Vegas" block and I would definitely recommend getting a cab or renting a car.

Car rentals were as cheap as $18 a day for like a nissan Sentra.

If you want an inexpensive steak and beer, check out Ellis Island for $6.99.

Unless you want a lot of sushi, I'd probably recommend the Bellagio Buffet over Todai. Although with the discount, Todai is $4 cheaper.

Pampas is good if you like Bolero here.

Apparently Paris Hilton visited Planet Hollywood last Thursday and on Friday Lindsay Lohan was at Pure (Caesar's) with Samantha Ronson as DJ. I wouldn't have minded to check out Lindsay at Pure but it's not very big and I'm sure it would have been crazy that night.

Tomorrow night should be happening too at Pure as there's the UFC at the MGM and Mandy Moore is hosting some afterparty at Pure.

For good entertainment, check out Sapphire.

As for the weather there, it was warm in the sun and cool in the shade. You probably will need a light jacket for the evening and night.

As for shopping, if you want better stuff i.e. BR, Burberry, etc, then head to the North outlet. it's similar to the Premium outlet outside Seattle (Tulalip). The only place that I thought was worth checking out at the South outlet was Saks off fifth. As for the Fashion Show mall, I'd say skip it unless you want to go to Abercrombie or a few other select stores. It's very nice in there but your money will go further at the outlets.

I didn't check out Primm and unlike Seattle, you have to pay the tax at any of the outlets.

If you haven't seen any of the shows, I'd recommend seeing one of the cirque shows, i.e. Ka, O, Mystiere. I saw Ka and thought it was very good.

From what I heard of Criss Angel, go see it only if you want to see Criss Angel in person.

From talking to a few cabbies, the vegas economy is significantly down right now due to the US economic conditions so it's not as busy there. The attendance at the conferences are down about 40%. I never found anything to be really that packed so I think if you research, you could get some pretty good deals.

I just came back from Vegas last night and I had an amazing time. I ran out of time to do all the stuff I wanted to.

We stayed at TI and it was pretty good...the rooms were nice. We were right next to the Fashion Show Mall. I didn't get to check out the Sirens of TI show cuz we ran out of time.

Like everyone else has said, a Vegas block is massive. We walked down the entire strip twice but had to take a cab back cuz we were so exhausted.

As for clubbing, we went to Pure on Sunday but a few of the rooms were closed down. I didn't have a chance to check out Tryst and heard that was the place to be on Sundays. We went to Ghostbar at the Palms on Monday and that was kinda bunk...the only thing I liked was the view. Studio 54 at MGM was all right on Tuesday. LAX in the Luxor is the place to be on Wednesdays. Mike Tyson and some Maxim models were there when we went.

If you wanna be baller, then go to the Forum Shops in Caesars. But if you wanna save some money, then definitely go to the Premium Outlets. Coach was having a 50% off sale when I went.

Definitely try to catch a Cirque show while you're there. We went to Zoomanity and it was awesome. And spend the extra 20 bucks to be near the front.

Food wise, I only got to go to the Buffet at TI and it was all right. We tried to go to the one in the Bellagio but got there just as they were closing. I enjoyed going to Cheesecake Factory at the Forums...way better than Cheesecake Cafe here.

And go to Spearmint Rhino...good times :D

We were also there last weekend, we stayed at Planet Hollywood for $100/night. It was nice.

We watched five shows: two cirque, one magic, one comedy, and one one-man-show. All of them are well worth it.

I end up losing money on the 1 cent slots trying to win the OCC bike. :poosie:

Going to vegas on friday staying at MGM!
I've been creeping the threads looking for deals and interesting things to see and do that they don't tell you on the touristy websites.
I've been to vegas before 2 years ago and it was a good time but that was more of a casual vacation went to hoover dam and rented car and went to mead lake but this trip is to party.

any advice would be unbelievable!

Got back from Vegas not long ago. Stayed in a beautiful suite at the Palazzo, the new sister property of the V. Great hotel, IMO, but basically the same as the V. I absolutely loved the smell of the Palazzo. Whatever addictive chemical they pump into the air, it smells amazing, lol. Didn't have enough time to finish all the shopping I wanted to do, so I'll probably head back again in December :D

Yeah, I heard some myths about those smells they pump into the casinos, wonder if any are true. The Trump was pretty strong and I noticed the smells in most of the hotels.

We stayed at the Bellagio in October. Saw Bill Clinton walking downstairs haha.
I wouldn't stay there again. The hotel is too big to get around in and it gets too busy with all the people taking pictures etc...

I'll be in Vegas at the Paris hotel Wednesday morning, and I'll be a married man by Friday afternoon. Be down there for 10 days. I have no idea what I'm going to do in Vegas for 10 days. Maybe go shoot full auto's and rent a dune buggy...

Congrats :)

There are a bunch of gunshops that you should check out. The one I went to had an incredible selection of full autos, shotguns and sniper rifles. I remember it to be very expensive though. I think I spent about $100 shooting an M14 (50 bullets), some massive sniper rifle (5 bullets) and a pump action shotgun that the guys call the "Boom Stick" (by far the funnest). Anyways, you can get more information at www.thegunstorelasvegas.com

Take a heli ride over Hoover dam. They are really expensive but worth it for the two of you. Hit the Wynn and Bellagio buffets, they are both fantastic. 10 days is a long time in Vegas but its well worth it.

Can't believe nobody mentioned The Hotel at Mandalay Bay. It's a separate tower connected to Mandalay Bay, amazing rooms relatively cheap too. Rooms were massive, something like 800 square feet, 4 TV's in the room, 2 in the washrooms, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. Even had 2 separate washrooms. Really quiet and pretty trendy, looks like a hotel that you would find in New York, not Vegas. If your looking for a quiet hotel it's probably one of the best.

One of the few hotels without a casino though, but it's only a 1 min walk to Mandalay Bay and you get to use their pool too. Only thing that sucked about it is that its located on the south end of the strip, furthest hotel actually, so if you're looking at going to Ceaser's or Venetian or the Wynn, it's quite a distance away.

we stayed at the Riveria. not a bad hotel at all. rooms were clean and just average in size. it s on the far north end of the strip. this is the hotel that austin powers stays at in the first austin powers movie. lol

Depends on your budget... I've stayed all over the place, and most of it is over rated....

Vegas is a place you are out all the time, and maybe only sleep and fornicate in your room.... so, as long as the sheets are clean....

MGM is building some condos right on the strip (across from PH roughly), starting @ $650k... time share anyone?

TKRIS
12-05-2008, 09:18 AM
My parents have a timeshare in Vegas right next to the strip, but I don't think it's completed yet. They were staying at the Wyndam Grand (a couple blocks east of the strip) this time. Nice place. When I go back next, I think I'm going to use some of their timeshare credits to go that route. You'd save a shitton of money just by being able to have some food for breakfast and snacks around instead of having to go out for meals all the time.

If I can swing it, I'm going to go back this July.

Also, make sure you head down to Discount Firearms Center. It's not far off the strip, quite a bit cheaper and less crowded than The Gun Store (from what I can gather)friendly staff, and full auto....
http://www.discountfirearmsinc.com/

So much fun. I could have stayed there all day, and spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Don't blow all your money at the tables before you try this, because you'll likely decide that this is a fuck of a lot more fun than losing at Blackjack...

I heard there are a few good restaurants in the Venitian

From what I've heard Bellagio has an awesome buffet. I didn't get to go to it when I went to Vegas in Nov. I've also heard good things about the Spice Market Buffet in Planet Hollywood.

As far as shows go, I checked out Zoomanity at New York New York and I enjoyed it. I heard that O in the Bellagio is pretty good too.

Oh how I miss Vegas already

The Palazzo is an awesome place. It's a shame that they charge so much for their rooms. When I went there, the cost for the Venetian was more than a stay at the Bellagio :banghead:

Venetian for the win!

Amazing, cheap suites, and ontop of that one of the finer hotels if not the finest.

The wynn is nice, but its hard to get availability during the summer, and at the same time resturaunts suck in my oppinion.

Pallazzo should be good since it's the Venetian's sister hotel.

Next time I go down, I'm taking advantage of the palazzo!

We ate at the Prime steakhouse at Bellagio on their patio. Best steak I've ever had but it's very expensive.

I walked by the line for the buffet at Bellagio a few times and there was no way I am patient enough to wait that long to get in.
