It wasn't even a stolen car they were following! :) funny cops.

----snip---

At 8:50 AM on Monday, 27 May 2002 three police officers were
injured when a collision occurred between two marked police
units.

At 0846 hours a 2 man marked police unit, observed a reported
stolen 1991 Ford Escort being driven westbound on 16 Ave NW
from Centre St area. There were a reported five occupants
inside the Escort. The police unit followed this vehicle
westbound on 16 Ave. and called into Communications who then
dispatched several other police units to provide back up and
assistance. The police unit following the Escort made no
effort to stop this vehicle as they waited for the arrivalof
other police units. The District Sergeant (supervisor) was
made aware of this incident and monitored and gave direction
to the next arriving unit before an attempt to stop the
Escort was to be made. Radio station CHFM's helicopter -
police call sign #9600 - was also aware of this call and
witnessed this incident.

The Escort obeyed all traffic laws, was not being driven
suspiciously and eventually turned south into the SAIT campus
at 12 St. NW. This vehicle then immediately turned right onto
a SAlT road named Fowler Street which parallels 16 Ave. NW
between 12 St. and 14 St. NW. The Escort and the following
marked police unit were driving at a slow speed during this
time.

A second marked police unit, a 1 man car, was eastbound on 16
Ave. NW and arrived at the scene operating with its emergency
equipment, overhead lights and siren, activated. This second
marked unit crossed over 2 lanes of traffic on eastbound 16
Ave. NW, across a 10.8 meter wide grass median and hit the
police unit following the Escort on the passenger front and
side with its front end. The Escort continued on its way
being observed by #9600 and ended up in a SAIT parkade where
it was later located.

Injuries sustained by the officers in the two police units
were varied. The driver of the unit following the Escort
suffered minor bruising and scrapes to one of her arms. The
passenger sustained bruised ribs and bruising to his body.
Both officers were treated and released after treatment. The
driver the second back-up unit sustained head and neck
injuries that are not life threatening and is still
undergoing treatment at the Foothills Hospital.

The driver’s airbag of the second unit and passenger airbag
of the primary unit both deployed.

The Ford Escort was reported stolen by the driver who had
parked it at the North Hill Shopping Center on 27 November
2001, while he attended SAIT. In actuality the Escort had
been towed to an impound lot which notified the registered
owner that it was there. The registered owner recovered the
vehicle in November but for unknown reasons the licence plate
and vehicle remained on the police system as a stolen
vehicle.

All five occupants of the car where located on the SAlT
campus and were interviewed. They are not suspected of any
fault in this collision.

The Investigation by the Traffic Section is continuing.

That's nothing new. I know where they go for body work for their vehicals and you would be shooked at the amount of damaged interceptors...
-no small damaged but missing fenders, crushed tops... I mean one wonders how they drive?

My father works for the police service (not a cop though.)

At least one accident occurs every single day involving a police vehicle(and we're not talking fender benders here...)

I think the cops are justified in getting into more accidents, they do drive quite a bit more and under more severe conditions to serve and protect, but I wouldn't be surprised if they do play a few immature games and stunts while on duty (eg, hide and seek)

Cops drive those vehicles into the ground, I talked to one at Tim Hortons asked about the engines and stuff (307's) and the guy said a cop car is the last thing on earth that he would buy.

FURTHER TO POLICE VEHICLE COLLISION – 27 MAY 2002

The police unit following the suspected stolen car was
westbound on Fowler Street (SAIT roadway) traveling at about
30 kph without any emergency equipment activated. The
secondary or back-up unit was eastbound on 16 Ave. NW and the
emergency equipment had been activated to clear the
intersection at 14 St NW. The driver of the back-up unit
took evasive action to avoid a vehicle, which entered 16 Ave
NW from northbound 14 Street NW. The evasive action resulted
in the unit mounting the south grass median, skidding and
subsequently striking the other police unit. This was not a
planned maneuver to block or stop the Ford Escort that was
being followed.

All the officers injured in this collision have now been
released from hospital.

The investigation is continuing by the Traffic Section.

IMO, I can't see the justification in this case. This has to be driver error.

Flip side:
Many :nut: don't yield to EMV which is the cause of most accidents.
