How deep was it and do you have a CAI?

Just use a hairdryer to dry it out.
You bent your rods. Start shopping for a new engine.
puddle pro tip, just dump the throttle to close the TB BV.

My car did the same thing, if you have a distributor, you probably got water in it. it should be easy to tell if you did, just open up the distributor cap and you'll see water marks.

Lethbridge got a flash flood a few days ago and peope were breaking down all over the fucking place after trying to drive their Corollas threw 1 1/2 foot deep water.... I personally think they deserve it.
You bent your rods. Start shopping for a new engine.

i drove my car through a huge puddle (about a foot deep...) in royal oak and my car sputtered then came back when i was through the puddle. My car also has a problem starting after sitting in a night of rain. In my case, i changed the spark plug wires which helped but did not erase the problem. I then replaced my distributor cap for one that sealed properly and my car has been good since. Once its dry, it should be good to go, then your problem will be keeping it dry like me.

once i got through the puddle it kept sputtering too, it gained power at times then one time i came to a stop sign and it wouldnt go anywhere fast! What is the distrubitor cap? the one that says dont open when hott?

1.6 el doesn't have a distributor - i don't think
do they use a MAF sensor?
if those get wet,.. it'll screw with your driveability
Other than that,.. sounds like maybe wet wiring causing problems.
might clear up when it dries
find out where your air filter is and check it out,.. if it's damp then you got some water up in your intake,.. you should clean off all your sensors along the intake
Then maybe swap spark plugs,.. those could be damaged now

i had a carbon fiber evo hood for my 03 Lancer a few years ago with an SRI. i was in the car wash without the protector for the vents and it stalled in the car wash. i couldnt start it for over an hour and i had a CEL for a day, but then everything went back to normal. i say let it dry out and see what happens.
Oh I know whats wrong i've seen this before...............
Your car is a piece of shit.

If you want to keep your car on the road even if it's F'd I would follow the whole "put the fridge inside a larger fridge" technique. Works every time.

while you're waiting for it to dry, look under it and see if any wires are loose? maybe just from the drag, a crank sensor or something else is just lose?

Next time, Take the puddle faster. Either you'll
A - Skip across (In a lighter smaller car)
B - Plow throw and the water parts for you (SUV/Truck)
C - Injure small children

i fucking hate rain
i have to say though, i put a hydroshield on my cai last week, and without it im sure my engine would be flooded by now.
i had relatively no difficulty driving from near the airport all the way to mckenzie towne while the rain poured and poured just had to watch out for the puddles, and if they were unavoidable i just put the car in neutral and coasted through

I saw a huge puddle earlier today in the road (looked like a backed up sewer) and I just turned around and avoided it, no sense taking a chance!

No 1.6 el's came with distributors. The change to distributorless ignition came with the 1.7 el.
I don't understand how drying your air filter could've fixed anything. If the water level was as high as your air filter, your engine would've failed altogether.

i was thinking the same thing, i think by the time he dried off the air filter whatever was wet in the engine had dried off as well.
