Looking for a recco for a Sushi place in Calgary. Not AYCE. I did a search but didnt find anything that wasnt AYCE related or very specific. I would preffer NW or downtown locations please. Freshness/quality is priority #1.

I did see the one review listed in this section, so I am considering that and have also been told about Kyoto 17.

My favorite place is Towa, but i don't really get plain sushi/sashimi when i go there. Their rolls are the best i've tried so i usually only get rolls when i go there.

Towa
Best place by far.

Globefish is good but it's pricey, and it's more about presentation imo.

Misato is also decent, their Calgary Rolls are hugeee and they're delicoius.

I'm going to try Zipang tmw actually! Heard good things about it.

Sushi in Calgary has polar extremes, I would say most of the establishments serve below average to disgusting sushi.

BUT the good places in Calgary are VERY good.

[By sushi I mean sushi and not rolls.]

When I want to go for good sushi I go to Zipang.

I found the size of the portions at Globefish dissapointing. Rather small in my opionion. Sushi Bar Zipang is still tops with me.

npham
07-16-2008, 02:07 PM
I don't like Globefish either. Their portions are varying depending on the day you go and the for the price, it's not very appealing. They do make wondering presentation for sushi though.

It took myself a while to try Zipang, but this is easily one of the best, if not the best place in Calgary for sushi. Another couple restaurants I would happily recommend are Misato's and Shibuya(great late night place). While Wa's food is good, I don't think you are getting your money's worth when compared to any of the sushi places I've mentioned sans Globefish for reasons stated above.

+1 for Umi Sake House in Seattle.

In Calgary, I probably eat Sushi two or three times a week and try as many places as I can.

I'll go ahead and say there are a lot of terrible sushi places in this city. But when you find a good one, it's VERY good.

Great sushi:

Momo Yama (37th and Richmond)
Misato (Sarcee and 17th)
Blowfish (11th Ave and 5th St SW)

Good sushi:

Sushi Boat (crowfoot village)
Towa Sushi (4th st and 20th ave sw)
Globefish (14 st NW, or 33 Ave SW in Marda Loop)
Uptown Sushi (Across from co-op midtown market)

Average, unmemorable sushi:

Sushi House Richmond (by canadian tire near westhills)
Shikiji (Center street) - only tried it once, and have had plenty of strong recommendations. i owe it another shot.
Shibuya Izakaya (16th ave) - only place open late-night in the city though, so they get more business from me than they would otherwise.
Sakana Grill (Chinatown)

Avoid:

Sushi BBQ Inn (16th ave, across from SAIT)
Yamato (7th ave and 6th st sw)

On my list of places to try:

Wa's (center street)
Zipang (bridgeland)
chef's studio Japan (canmore)
Sushi Ichiban (macleod trail)

LOL what a joke...we told her No and she shouldnt be so rude.

But ya i have yet to try Zipang...maybe this weekend

I like Kinjo sushi on Macleod.

Food is reasonable, tasty, and close to my house!

Also, the owner, Peter, is a really goofy bugger, walking around entertaining, joking with the guests, great place!

Towa on 4th street and 20th (?) ave has the sweet sauce, as well as Sushi Boat in Crowfoot Village. Both are very good.

Misato IMO is the best resturant bar none in this city

Globafish, Maruju, Misai, and Towa are pretty good and at the same level

Sakana, Sumo, and Kinjo are the McDonalds of Sushi, but sushi nevertheless

I'm off to New York tomorrow and going to be eating at Sushi Yasuda next Wednesday. Three of us have reservations at the Sushi bar in front of Mr. Yasuda himself.

A little research will show that it's one of the top sushi restaurants in North America (quite a few sources say it is the best), and it was acclaimed as the #2 restaurant overall in NYC in 2006 by Zagat Survey.

When I get back I'll give a full report and compare it to Calgary's sushi scene. Hopefully I'll be able to take some pictures of the delicious sushi as well.

Zipang should be open. Keep on trying.

They are extremely busy and there are times when you'll have to make a reservation a day or two in advance. Especially for Friday or Saturday nights.

But definitely worth it. One of the best sushi restaurants in Calgary.

Couple of great ones:

Yamato - across from SWC highschool by Northland mall. Large portions, very fresh

Zen 8 - Portions not great, however very fresh and trendy.

Sushi Bar Miki - In the Bowness area, surprisingly good.

For decent AYCE:

Sumo Lounge on 10th - usually the AYCE Sushi & Sashimi

Sushi Bar Zipang, I agree this is the best sushi in Calgary by far.

We went on a Thursday right after it opened (5 pm), within 30 minutes the place is packed and they have to turn people away.

It is not expensive at all, bill came the same as when we eat at other sushi place.

Also, their dessert is to die for...

I went to sushi inn before. All you can eat?The waiter said you can't order this and you can only order that one time.I ordered my seconds thirds and forths and they gave me the wrong thing everytime. It looked like they didn't want to give me what I wanted instead just served me a bunch of assorted sushi before it went bad. That was BS.I walked out of there feeling I got robbed.

Sushi Inn is total crap. The only good all you can eat sushi I've been to is when I lived in Red Deer, at Shiso. On Saturdays they have an all you can eat for less than $25 IIRC.

Sushi BBQ Inn is the worst sushi restaurant in Calgary, and it's not close.
