HBO Brews a Viral Campaign With Tru Blood
By Jenna Wortham July 09, 2008 | 6:51:00 AM

Got blood?

A round of ads promoting Tru Blood, a "synthetic blood nourishment beverage," are actually covert viral promotion for HBO's new fall series True Blood.

The plasma protein drink is featured prominently in True Blood as the preferred beverage of choice for vampires hoping to integrate into human society in modern-day Louisiana.

Television spots (like the one right) and billboard ads with snappy slogans like "All Flavor, No Bite" and "Real Friends Don't Let Friends Drink Friends," are popping up all around the United States. More details can be found on BloodCopy, a viral tie-in site documenting the vampire-rights movement.

Tru Blood joins the ranks of fictional products that have become real. Other examples: Idiocracy's electrolyte-enriched energy drink Brawndo and Sex Panther, a cologne used in Will Ferrell's '70s spoof Anchorman, both of which were brought to life after debuting on the silver screen as props.

True Blood premieres Sept. 7 on HBO.

I tried digging for the actual nutritional facts on this, and here's what they wrote on their official site. :barf:

EDIT: Is this real???

Synthetic blood products contain varied cellular content than actual blood. Please consult a Tru Blood Cellular Specialist for specific nutritional information.

Are you actually asking?
The entire article is about product spoofs and viral marketing.
