Just wondering what's a good way to go for a guy who's interested in getting a bike. Just read the thread on the R6 saying that it's not a good starter bike. Any suggestions?

From what I've HEARD, because I've asked the same question.

600s

Yamaha YZF600
CBR600
Ninjas

Allthough people will say you should get something less than a 600 for your first bike. As long as you have some experiences riding (dirtbikes ect.) you should be ok, as long as you take it slow

for 600:

SV650
FZR600 (mine hehe)
YZF600R
CBR600F2/F3 preferably F2
Older ZX-6R

ideal would be the SV650, loads of fun and the most forgiving, probably the cheapest too, so you can afford the newer ones.

No, 600s are for wussies. You need like a Honda 1100xx blackbird or anything with a huge motor. Don't settle for liss that a 900cc.
If you're good enough there is no need to start slow.

I totally agree. I have only been riding for two years now with 0 bike experience prior. First bike: Ninja ZX9R = too slow for me Second Bike: Modded Busa = Never ending torque curve.

Get something big... or you will end up getting rid of it for something bigger in a year or so. It happened to me.....

Dumbest quote ever.. I'll take you to some of the graves of friends who made this statement if you want.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, A good rider on a 600 will destroy a mediocre one on a big bike. There is no need to have bigger than a 600 for your first bike.

There is no need to insult someones intelligence just because they have a different opinion than you. I know a few guys who started riding GSXR 1000's and they are doing just fine. It depends a lot on driving style. If you drive your car to the limit, don't get a big bike. If you push it once in a while, go bigger.

somewhat agree, depends on what reasons are for riding. posing and cruising around, not pushing it generally keep you more safe no matter what bike.

This is a stupid statement. Period. Ask Clint McBain or Chris Peris if riding there 600's makes them Wusses.. If I remember correctly (and I do), Chris Peris lead most of the Superbike National on a Prod racer Honda 600 this year.. So much for being a wus bike.

How the hell are you gonna know "your good enough" unless you've ridden for a while...

Sorry dude, I'm not attacking anyone personally, just the statement.. I'm sure if I met any of you guys in person we'd get along great.
I just feel pretty strongly about this stuff.. I've been in the biz a loong time and have seen too many dead people. This kinda stuff is what made me leave the full time bike biz ... too much carnage...

Walmart tricycle.

$45.00

Seriously now, I wouldn't even start riding on the street. Give serious consideration into buying a beat up pickup and a used dirt bike and spend some time learning how to ride before attempting the street.

Dodging folks with cell phones can by quite taxing.

just because your board with a bike doesnt mean you need a bigger one. all that means is you are more confident in your skills, you can make the same mistakes by starting out with to big a bike or by getting a bigger bike to fast. Im just learning to ride and ill end up with a 500 as my first bike for about 2 season and then ill go for a 600, for me 600 is the largest ill go as i would rather live to ride many times than ride a larger bike once.

'throw a fish in a sea, and it will learn how to swim'
Throw a dude in the sea, and he will flop around a lot and sputter and maybe drown, or he will learn to swim. 50-50. ;)

I plan on gettin' an old crapbike and learning on that... either that or a newer 500. The 600s are pretty much all race-derived, and while they can be fairly mild if you keep 'em in the bottom end of their performance range while you're learning, you can still accidentally put 'em in the high end (hit a bump and twist the throttle, or grab too much brake in a hard stop) and in that range, they're unforgiving enough that they will most likely put your noob ass on the ground.

Besides, the 600s tend to depreciate in value fairly quickly 'cause the tech changes every year. The Ninja 5 and the GS500 haven't changed since time began. You can get a used one, learn on it, and sell it again for almost as much as you paid for it. It's like rent.

this thread is too funny. bored with a 600ss? is your friends name Mat Mladin?

give me a katana 600, and i could probably dust your buddies ass in the twisties. straightline speed sucks ass.

sure people could learn to survive on a new litre bike, but can they learn to really ride it?

remember, its more fun to ride a slow bike fast, then to ride a fast bike slow.

seriously, I dont understand how people could get bored with a 600.

yeah maybe bored with grabbing a bunch of throttle. if thats all you can do, why do you even have a bike?

there's pro riders out there on NSRs and TZs that would hand you your ass on whatever bike you chose.

you can always be a better rider, but thats obviously not what some of you guys want. you want the most expensive and biggest displacement sport bike out there, regardless of your riding experience, because you want to impress people you dont even know.

havent you seen those levitra commercials? that's how you improve your confidence, not with a 15 thousand dollar bike. :D

Anyone starting out should not even touch a newer sportbike.. I dont care how good you are. I dont care if you have riden dirtbikes your whole life. Its much different. some of the older sportbikes like have been mentioned would help a new guy learn the basics of riding. And when he does drop his bike it won't be as bad as if he dropped a brand new bike. baby steps.... you have your whole life to upgrade and learn.

Your first bike you're going to dump on the ground and fuck up a lot anyway, so why buy something nice? My first bike was a 1991 GSX-R 750 that sadly I had to let go when I moved  So sometime in the next little while i'm going to find me a limited edition 2004 GSX-R 1000, or a silver 2004 R1 :)
