Thanks to everyone that sent me ideas - I got a EOS 300D kit for $200 from a beyonder that was feeling charitable. This is exactly what I need to get started with.

And there are hacked firmwares - fun stuff!

Futureshop in the NE had a open box XSi that someone returned with a XTi kit lens. It was around $650 I think, I'm sure you could get them down a bit more on it.
