You can use cookies sheets and line them with parchment or nonstick spray. Put your oven on the lowest setting and crack it open just a little and do everything yourself. This is what I did for years.

Alton Brown also used a box fan for his jerky, it's suppose to be wonderful. http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_31151_,00.html

I tried for a free one a few time on freecycle...everytime I asked I never got a reply. When they came up I always missed them. I suppose your is the Craigslist ad. haha!

I finally broke down last week and bought one for our trip, they had the nesco pro on sale at London Drugs for 59.00 and it came with Jerky cure and seasoning. We did strawberry fruit leather, apples slice and jerky. All of it was good. It just takes lots of time. Your oven will do bigger batches that is for sure.

Just make sure when you do fruit leather which is nothing more than puree your favourite fruits don't add water, don't add sugar and line the bottom of a pan not deep though. It took 12 hours in the dehydrator, and it's a litter quicker in the oven and you get more done at once.

Good luck, there are several online resources for oven recipes. http://www.google.ca/search?q=fruit+leather+in+oven&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

thanks man!

actually, someone saw my craigslist ad, and emailed me about a ronco food dehydrator at value village for $10. i went and picked it up this afternoon. came with the instructions and everything.

the nesco's are far superior because they have a fan to circulate the air inside, while the ronco just has a heating element.

oh well, not bad for $10.
