View Full Version : Have gas prices influenced your vehicle purchase?

Pretty simple question. If you have bought a vehicle in the past six or eight months, how big of a role did fuel consumption play in your choice? Did you buy something smaller than you would have at say, $.75 per litre?

ZERO influence.
I bought a 2.7 twin-turbo, then installed bigger turbos for the sole purpose of burning more fuel. If my pockets are feelin kinda light I'll take the bike out. 0-60 in 3 seconds while getting 35+ mpg.

big thing in my mind.

I was going to buy a new pick up, but when it came down to it, i knew that gas prices were going to go through the roof this summer, so instead i bought a jeep with a 2.4l instead of the 5.7l hemmi.

Last summer I bought both of my vehicles (06 325 and 06 Expedition) and gas may be higher right now but it wouldn't change my decision at all. The car is good enough on gas and the suv sucks it back pretty hard but I have a large travel trailer so I need something to tow it and there really isn't much difference mileage wise in that category of vehicle.

of course it did.

I think it would actually make me consider a larger vehicle. I hear big SUV's are getting POUNED on black book values for use vehicles. I don't actually drive a whole lot, so i would probably go "larger" because i'd feel i was getting more bang for my buck.

No. Only thing that influences me is whether I can get a discount on the car, in addition to cheap financing haha

nope
i don't see how tens of dollars a week in savings of gas can make ppl not buy their favorite car within their budget

i live outside calgary and needed a highway car. i bought a supercharged civic, and if im light on it i might get 480 km/ tank but i think i need a bigger fuel pump. either way, for what i needed, im not sure it was even the right choice for my highway car. i should have stayed away from the stuff done to the car and went for purely gas mileage. whatever i guess.

i just got a CTS-V. Floor that thing and you need a direct pipeline to the oil sands. However, every car i've ever owned has given me bad mileage due to the way i drive.

big time influence with me

Gas prices influenced my decision. I've owned gas guzzlers for the longest time, spending about $100 worth of gas twice, three times, or even four times a week. We now have a 2008 Astra for driving around and it's only $45 bucks to fill up.

It was the main factor in actually making me purchase a vehicle. Had to give up the truck and get a car. Already saved 50% of my gas costs. Makes a huge difference in the account.

Well I've bought 2 TDIs in the past 6 months... what do you think?

Yeah, I went with a 4 cyl instead of a 6. My friend told me his daily driven G35 was sucking it down which affected my decision.

The only cars I've ever driven have been fuel efficient. '90 corolla, '99 corolla, '06 civic..
Getting 500km+ per tank.. and I fill up once a week. I dunno what I'd do if I drove something that needed premium, and only got 300km/tank.

However, I don't think it would stop me from getting a car I really wanted in the end.

Bought a motorcycle, put the car on "pleasure driver" insurance. But that's more of an "I'm a student again" kind of budget decision. I like eating REAL Kraft dinner, not the no-name stuff :D

If gas were .75c a litre I would drive hard all of the time. If anything it's influenced the way that I drive rather than the vehicle I purchased.

WRX is lucky to get 22MPG in town.

For me it's less the gas prices and more the environmental impact of burning so much fuel. I was thinking of a lifted truck or SUV (RX300), but now I'm thinking something smaller like a Celica GTS or RSX-S with a good set of racks for bikes / skis and other outdoor gear.

I work in the oil sector and care about the environment....strange!

yep, bought my civic just for fuel savings, it gets me about 150KM/tank more than my other car, and the tank is the same size.

so basically every 4th fill is a free tank of gas.

From what I've seen in the last while.
The only people really concerned about buying something good on gas are the people that are already driving fuel efficient vehicles.
The people driving trucks/ big SUV's don't care and continue to buy/trade for trucks and other SUV's.

There have been a few people thought that have traded down to smaller cars only because of the fuel consumption. One couple I dealt with that both traded there vehicles are saving $800/month in gas alone!

if i dindt have to use my truck for work, i probably wouldnt have bougth it. but then again, i wouldve got an STi instead and that would probably be even worse on gas lol.

Nope, I Plan to mod my new WRX when I get it even more.

50 dollars a week isn't going to stop me from having my fun, and AWD Winter awesome.

I'd dye in a smart car or corolla.

It did somewhat for me. The Saab gets 30mpg combined, and I just bought a small bike that gets 325km to a $15 fill. The bike = DD, the Saab = groceries.

For me it did. Why the fuck would anyone buy a Metro otherwise?

The other day my buddy was filling up his f350 and this comes in metro, fills it up, pays for it and leaves before my buddy was even done filling it up....loll If its my only car obviously gas prices pay a huge role.

It will influence my next purchase.

When I bought my 2003 cavalier, it was rated for 45mpg on the highway. I ALWAYS get 48mpg on the highway. Now that the new cobalt SS with a turbo is rated at 43mpg on the highway, I think thats my next car I will buy (not till next year :banghead: ).

Also currently shopping for an S2000. Fuel prices havent influenced that choice at all. The struggling USA economy has influenced my future S2000 purchase... :D.

not really. even if the price of gas costed me like $40 dollars more a week, what is that? not too much, if i was working. But being a student means, I'll stick with my Lude. haha
