The M button is nearly magical. Pushing the button accelerated the car up to 40 mph, where we had been cruising at 35 mph. The M button is actually a shortcut to a set of performance preferences that you can choose in one of the M3's onscreen menus. There are four parameters you can change, which affect the handling and throttle response. There are also buttons next to the shifter that let you quickly change the settings for the suspension and throttle.

Only on the M5 does it change from 400-->500hp as well as the most sporty settings for suspension, throttle, and TCS.

On the M3 it only changes suspension, TCS, throttle settings, and it's configurable in the iDrive menu.

The M3 doesn't feel that fast in Calgary. I've rode in one. NA + 3700ft == zero wheelspin. I'll bet it's a lot faster at sea level where you can get yourself in trouble tho.

The M3 doesn't impress me at all. All that power and it's barely quicker around a track than an EVO X.
