Hahah. I love that car. It shares the same rear lights with the AE86 (US + Canada versions).

Walked in front of this thing on 8 Avenue one day last year, one of the loudest engines I've heard.

they share engines right now, the engine in the elise comes right out of the corolla.

and the new Evora that they just announced will use the v6 engine out of the camry.

but yeah... beautiful car, they are planning to make a new esprit soon, i hope they do.

lambos were built by a couple farmers in a machine shop. they really used whatever the hell they could get their hands on.

to further add to the lotus/toyota thing.

They became friends a looooong time ago. (ever wonder why the 86-89 MR2 looks like it should have a lotus badge?)

Even Porsche makes SUV's now.... yea the car had a "handling by Lotus" label on it, but it wasnt a spectacular performer - I suspect it was more marketing than anything.

Very cool cars!!

The taillights are made by a manufacturer that then sells them to whatever car companies need them, and europen companies, especially ones that dont make a ton of cars, can avoid the costs of tooling their own molds if they use stuff like that, I believe that the VW Scirocco also used that same taillight on a few years. The most interesting case of parts use like that is the Mclaren F1, it used the tallights from a truck manufacturer, a million dollar car with semi-truck taillights!

Wow, Esprits still run?

It's a cool car and all, but I would never buy one, not worth the headaches. They're not known for reliability hehe.

I was stuck in traffic behind an older one the other day, probably S1 or S2 model can't tell the difference, the thing looked like it was about to die. I got a headache after 2 blocks of eating oil smoke.

S4 and up ( S4S is the Limited production sporty version ) are actually quite reliable .. :D but they are not cheap to maintain ..

Well .. only 10,000 Espirts were built .. in ~ 30 yrs .. vs ~ 20,000 F360 .. they are so rare ..

Most S1 S2, SE, S4 and V8 around .. but S4S, Sport 300, 180R are even more rare ....

But at the end of the day .. GM engine/tranny + Toyota/GM electronic .. if you can find their parts # under GM/Toyota .. then not bad at all! :D

Not sure where the GM engine/ tranny comments comes from but the 918 engine was developed by Lotus and the transaxle was the same Renault UN1.

The last Esprit's, the V8 twin turbos were actually quite reliable. Problem is the previous models reliability tainted the newer cars. Most of these cars don't get driven frequently so they suffer issues like fuel pumps and leaking transaxle seals. All in all a great car, and unlike the large number of Ferrari's in town a true rare sight.

Lotus raced the V8 in GT1 against the mighty McLaren F1, with limited success and budget. They did manage to out qualify and lead some races.

I like the DeTomaso Pantera a bit more though. :D

The one thing I've noticed about the Espirit's that looks a bit off is when looking at the profile of the car, the front spoiler is much lower to the ground then side skirts or the rear valences. Gives it a sort of "unfinished" look.

the guy in the orange esprit hosted a ufc party tonight, he's a one of the coolest guys i've met and owns all season motorsports. Name is Steve! He does crazy things like dresses up for giggles...love the fake teeth lol. It's the 25th anniversary edition. I love it! He took it for a drive around aspen and it sounded amazing!

He bought it in the states in cali and i guess there was a lotus run down there too!

they used GM engine electronics, not engines...same faults and codes as Saturns for example. remember a customer taking 1 home a turbo SE on a friday and needing a rebuild on monday. used a litre of oil by sunday and owner used a rag to wipe up drop of oil on valve cover while the engine was running.......rag went into timing belt ........holed 2 pistons bent most of the valves and 1 camshaft. not covered by warranty. $12K.
