It's much more than the Mayan calendar, it's the fact that all 9 planets are going to line up on that date into a perfect straight line and it was Nastrodamus' prediction that this would be the day the world ends. Also, I believe that year is also the end of our current aeon where we would leave the Ago Of Pisces and enter the Age Of Aquarius as per the procession of the equinox. That day is an astronomer's wet dream, there's much more to it than a calendar.

The Mayan's believed on new generations or eras. December 21 2012 is simply the start of a new era, a new time for our world and not necessarily the end of the world.

Look at it in the sense of our technology today. The calendar on my cellphone ends on December 25 2182... What if my cell phone got lost out in the woods, and someone found it found a way to charge it back up and discovered what I discovered. Would they maybe not believe that the world was going to end on that day as well?

Also the Mayan calendar was chiseled in on a circle. They could of ran out of room...

Actually I forgot to add, the "...end of the world" quote which I believe is from the bible is a mistranslation (apparently according to Zeitgeist) of "....end of the Aeon" or "Age". Which is right because we'll be leaving the Age Of Pisces like I said.
