I would keep a straw in my mouth, the length of a smoke... and sometimes puff it like a cig or just chew on it...

Might work.

I would recommend the nicorette patches. They help tons because they give you a steady flow of nicotine through your bloodstream over a course of 24 hours. When you have a ciggarette you get a high dosage but it goes away which creates cravings.

I didn't smoke for too long of a time but I know people who have and have gone on the patch. It doesn't take long to kick the habit at all. The most important thing is to lessen the cravings and the next is to stop the habit of picking something up when you're bored, nervous, etc..

You should look up some information on the internet as well, it helps tons reading other people's stories about quitting smoking and how much their lives are different now that they don't smoke.

I haven't had a ciggarette since January 2, 2007 --- I love smoking too and honestly wouldn't of given it up if it not were people I love. Find a reason and you'll find a way.

Lots of people want to quit for various reasons...

If you were to ask a bunch of smokers if they could wake up tomorrow and never crave a smoke again or even think about it. They would. They know it's a terrible thing.

But the reason they don't do this on their own is because quitting is very hard and takes so much effort.

I guess I've found with myself and some people around me, they're intentions are good, they probably do want to quit, but they don't want to that bad, or else they would.

Just gotta find some motivation or a powerful reason to do so.

I'm tired, so if none of that makes sense, nuke it.

I've been smoking since I was 14 so...11 years now but I've been having this really bad cough for the past 2 months now, it kinda scared me a lil but it could also be from my job as a welder too so   but its a good time to quit now as theres hardly anywhere in public you can smoke anymore....thats one of the reasons I'm quitting but main one is obviously healthwise.....friends were saying if you want to quit just throw away the Marlboro carton, I'm like F that, I just bought it, I'm smoking them all

Have fun with the nico gum, they're pretty nasty...another alternative if you havent tried is the puffer system thingie...

On a sidenote, once I quit, my cars interior will be clean

go to the doctor and get a perscription of champix.

a few friends have went on it and just stopped smoking -

from what i have googled its not actual nicotine it stops the addiction in your brain or something

Grogador

+1 for Champix, it blocks the nicotine receptors... you take it and keep smoking for a week or two, to build it up in your system... then you quit... and you don't crave or enjoy smokes. I heard some research paper that it can cause psychotic or suicidal behavior so uhh, don't slash anyone?

i really don't like the idea of medication. I like to think that I have enough will power that if i want to quit, I will cold turkey. I was just hoping someone knew of a way to lessen this craving.

I know that i am going into my second day not smoking, but i tell ya, i am almost ready to go outside and have one pretty hard.

what makes it so hard, is i got 5 packs left in my carton in the freezer.....

All what matters is first 72 hours; if you can go by 72hrs without smoking, it's a piece of cake. I think I read it somewhere or saw it in "super size me"....it works though.

You're only going to quit if you hate it. If you don't hate smoking, then you'll have a very hard time. I have been smoking for 20 yrs and i have tried everything...I even started chewing tobacco and my Doctor told me to start smoking again, because chewing 100% pure tobacco is lot more worse then smoking.

Good luck to you and i really hope you succeed.

You must not be a smoker.

I was up until 5 weeks ago. As others have said, find a reason to quit, but do it for yourself. For me, my girlfriend and I both quit together and helped each other. I had smoked for probably close to 5 years and I still get cravings once in awhile now. But they are few and far between and I feel so much better.

Just take in one day at a time...

It's really hard when you drink. I remember when i tried quitting and i had few beers, i was going crazy for a smoke.

I used the patch to quit

the no-name crap doesn't stick worth a shit.

follow the instructions

for the mouth habit - chew "inferno" gum

the really hot cinamon spicy gum,.. worked pretty good.

on occasion i would have a minty toothpick

took over 3 months to be completely off the patch, but is well worth it

i used straws to quit

I think it's different for everyone. Straws, patch, gum, didn't work for me. Hanging out with people that didn't smoke was the easiest way.

I found that a good workout killed the craving for cigarettes too.

well, 36 hours and no smoke so far. this is really hard, not because it disgusts people, but because i really do enjoy smoking.

last night, the cravings were really bad, and they are not soo bad this morning, but we shall see how the day goes.

Remember, this is cold turkey, so i figgure once i get past the initial hump, i should have an easier time than most in quitting, just going to be harder at the start.

Good for you for having the initiative to do such a hard thing. That deserves a lot of respect. I have absolutely no experience on the topic so I can't really help you, but just wanted to wish you good luck!

i used to go for 2AM cruises by the 7-11, pick up a bag of chips and drive around for 20mins

yeah, stupid, expensive... but it worked :D

first couple weeks are hard, they say the cravings never really go away...... just recall, you can't have "just one" or "just a puff" you damn junkie ;)

Do you have kids??If you do, everytime you pick up a smoke, think about how each cig might take away 1 year of your life in seeing ur child grow up

that is part of it, although none here yet. my wife was pregnant until a month ago when we had a mis-carriage. I never smoked around her, but still can't help but think it may have been the cause or been a contributing factor in it.

where did you get this hypno thing done and how much was it. I know i am more easily hypnotized than most, as i have been made quite the fool of in a couple of bar shows and at the stampede.....did it really work that well for you?

oh, and a small update. about 44 hours now, and still no smokes. made the real decision and gave the 5 packs of smokes I had in the freezer away to remove the temptation.

i find that if i left my carton in the cabinets or wherever, i found they got stale really quick even in the celophane, in the freezer, they tasted a whole lot different, and the first puff of the first smoke out of a pack in the freezer is awesome. that pull, the smoke is really cold and is condensed soo much you get insta buzz off of it.

Quitting smoking is easy -- you just stop doing it.

I know that's glib but that's really the only way -- mind over matter.

Whenever you get a strong craving go for a run and book it up the street and back.

Once you start wheezing it'll remind you why you need to quit.

Frosty?

Chemical additives in a cigarrete ....

This is just a list of the additives and doesn't include the natural poisons in burning tobacco like tar, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and arsenic.

Remember this shit is only partially combusted and then the leftovers combine to make new chemicals, most all of which are toxic.

where did you get this hypno thing done and how much was it.

Honestly I cant really remember, but it was by Lance or Vance something. I got the hypno CDs he sold. Suppose to listen to it as a back up. Check Ticketmaster thats how I bought it. If you are serious about it.. check hypnotists in town, I know someone who wanted to go to one in town, $100/hr.. and it takes 2 hours.

Another thing that helped me quit was.. a very close family friend died at the age of 30 from lung cancer. She had alot going for her.. pretty.. smart.. newly wed and she died. I just dont think its worth smoking and slowly killing yourself.

I can try looking for the CDs if you want a copy. But I think its better if you go see a therapist to help. That way you know that your putting money into something you really want to do. If I gave you CDs.. you can listen to it.. and not get anything out of it because it was free. If you invest like $200.. you will try your hardest to get your monies worth.

after the 1st month.. I started to hack out really nasty shit.. yellow and black phlem.. think of all that gross shit in your lungs. by the 2nd month.. my cardio was slowly coming back to me. I didnt have short breaths anymore. I was really bad when I was smoking and playing hockey. 5 years later.. i feel alot better on the ice.

The only downfall was that I gained 30 lbs. I was in the hospital a week after the hypnosis thing, and I wasnt allowed to work out for 3 months.

Food tastes ALOT better when you quit! haha Make sure you eat healthy and get lots of exercise.. you will be happy you quit a month from now. Trust me!

my 2 cents.

You would think this would work, but by the number of pregnant smokers I've seen, either they don't know, don't care or simply can't quit.

And here I though that being pregnant would be enough reason to quit. Silly me. I've smoked but never been a smoker though.

To the OP, good on you. One day at a time.

Different people need different motivations to quit. For me.. it was for my health and my family friend passing away.

For my dad.. he picked up a smoke after a week of not smoking after the hypnotist session. But once he found out he had colon cancer, and beat it. He quit smoking right away.. once his chemo started.

He had a 25% chance on beating it.. and he did. So now his attitude towards life has completely changed. I havent seen him in a bad mood in a long time. Ever since my niece was born.. hes been one happy camper hahah

well, at like 62 hours now, and still no smokes. even decided to test myself by going outside with co-workers during a smoke break. oddly enough, i had no urge to smoke, but sure did enjoy the smell of it...

Im at 1 month and 2 weeks quit.

Its very hard for me since im a champ at smoking. (i'm very good at it) If there was as smoking contest i'd win the gold.

Anyway champix is awesome. All I needed was the starter pack and a bit of motivation.

Saved 300 bucks last month, bought carbon fiber shit for my gsxr.

Keep it goin dude and even if you start smoking again, try and quit again. One of these times you'll get it.

It is hard. I quit cold turkey for awhile. Just fight through the cravings.

I started again because a girl made me stop. Things went to shit with her, so I started. Never really wanted to quit in the first place. Yeah I know it's bad, but you have to want to to be successful.

Keep going! You'll do fine. Cold turkey is the more entertaining way to quit. Before I moved to Calgary I used to smoke almost 2 packs a day (Probably giving a good section of the second pack away, Damn Pipeline mooches) and when I decided to quit I just finished my last pack and called it.

The first few days were really weird, always feeling like your missing something, but it passes and then you just start to hack up all the tar that was caked to your lungs. Which I found happened while showering and is extraordinarily gross. But once that passes you'll start to feel a lot better, breathing improves (maybe) and even eventually you'll start to think that cigarettes smell really bad for some reason.

Good on you for quitting!

Like I said earlier.

When it gets tough like that sprint up the street and back - and hard. You don't think about smoking so much when you just need oxygen.

I need to quit smoking so bad. Been for 16 years. :thumbsdow

I have tried about 10 times in the last year. Problem for me is if i drink while i am trying to quit then all my resolve goes right out the window lol

So I need to temporarily quit drinking too

I think i am going to try again after the long weekend. I have a full stock of patches at home.

I did quit for a year once, was nice. Fuck do we ever stink!

well, i am feeling pretty proud about myself now, 4 days smoke free.

I will admit though, last night, on the way home, saw some person at the bus stop with a lit smoke....contemplated running em over for it lol.

today was actually really easy. night and day from yesterday. hardly any cravings at all.

The craziest thing about quitting smoking if you never quit smoking before is all the stuff that you notice without it. Like for example, after about 3 months of not smoking the stench of people who just smoked was ridiculous, I literally wanted to gag everytime someone came up to me and wanted to talk to me after smoking. Now, almost two years later the smell I got used to (I guess that's how it is for girls who don't smoke and guys that do who are together). I felt bad for my girlfriend hahaha.

I had a lot of bad coughing too before I quit smoking it was another reason to add to the list. Every morning you wake up and have these bad dry coughs. Man, that alone was enough to say hey you need to stop doing that shit.

well, figgured i would post an update.

i am now 11 days without a smoke, coming up on 12 pretty quick.

Cravings after day 3 have gotten steadily easier to handle, but i also think i have chewed more gum these past few days than i did in the past 2 years.....

Still going strong with no help. all will power.
