View Full Version : Cam + Tune in my Z06 - Results

Martin at AFI Performance in Edmonton installed a comp cam (from Texas Performance Speed) this weekend in my vette. I told him I wanted a cam that was a 5/10 on the mild to aggressive side.
I'm pretty happy with the results. The cam is really tame actually. The car idles at 700rpm with only the most slight lope. There's no surging when cruising at low rpms. I did lose a little fuel economy, 7.3L/100km to 8.3L/100km but that was with the AC on for the later #.

I have a video of the dyno and some street starts, but I need to buy something to get the video from RCA plugs into my PC.

Car:
2002 Z06
LG longtube headers w/ cats
Halltech CAI
Texas Speed 224/224, .581, 114LSA
Hardened pushrods
Comp 918 valve springs
Billet Double roller timing gear set

The biggest hp and tq gains were both at 6420rpm:
356.5whp to 399whp = +42.5whp
292wtq to 327wtq = +35ft-lbs wtq

Max hp was +36.5whp, and max tq was +26ft-lbs

The car definitely feels faster. I can't wait to get some rubber and hit the track on a Wednesday night with good air.
The cam install makes me want some good heads now, haha. It'd be nice to break 440whp/400tw NA and get into the 11's in Calgary. We will see. ;D

those are some pretty nice gains. does it have the wicked gurgly sounds now after adding the cam?

No, you can barely tell it's any different --> stealth mode :).
I don't mind that lumpy idle, but this is my first aftermarket cam so I went with something mild. It's easy to see 60+whp gains with a more agressive cam on these engines.

ok that makes sense. cant wait to see the videos though.

That seems pretty weak for a Z (no offence!!! =) ) - my 02 did 393/381 with LG LTs/bullets/venom/tune

I've never heard of a Z dynoing that high with those mods. That's a lot. I do realize that each car and each dyno is different, so I'm more interested in the gains and track performance.

380-395/370-380 is usually the typical range for a I/H/E/T C5Z.

:dunno:

Interesting, I've seen most I/H cars between 365whp and 380whp. I suppose the tune and exhaust could be worth another 15whp, neither of which I had for my baseline, and I still have stock mufflers.

There was a 02 Z at the shop with I/H (no cats)/E that made 380whp on the same dyno that I was on, so my base hp#'s are within 5-10hp of his if I assume his exhaust is worth 5hp. I'm not too concerned.

I don't track my car:(
too many mods but: magic stick 3 cams, LG longtube headers, VR intake, then the rest pushrods, retainers etc...but I dont understand how you can drive with a Z06 lowered:eek:

I think I see +50wtq around 5k rpm. That's a beefy gain right there lol!

Nice to see some C5's representing.

We should get together sometime. Go for a quick drive around town or go for some wings or something.

(2EFNFAST, I'm FRC Ken on the Corvetteforum.)

Where's the 640hp # coming from?? With your mods I figured it'd be around 480hp at the engine.

If you're looking for a stock, low mileage C5 which has been taken care of, it'll probably cost you low $30k's.

my z06 made 785 whp with just intake.

07-31-2008, 08:51 PM
^^ Those numbers are low... all the extra air from that intake might be choking off the power. You should install a HKS SSQV (I love mine) to vent some of the excess flow and your numbers should jump up about 35whp

I would ask to see yours but I'd hate to risk your 01 engine having an oil consumption issue and blowing up driving onto the dyno ;) (I kid, I kid, just some Z humor here!)

A Hooters meet one evening would be cool.

I'll be moving to Canmore on Sept.1 so sometime before that would be great. :)

I can be free any weekday evening except Wednesdays.

Why not just all meet up next wednesday night at home depot across from chinook center. There's a great show with all kinds of domestics representing. No cost, just roll in. Have a hamburger at the A&W, bring a chair, kick back, watch the cars come and go. Just an idea for you guys (weather permitting of course)... The more the merrier.
