I'm currently looking into buying a laptop, but to be honest, I don't know much about computers, let alone laptops.

So, basically, what do you guys recommend? I was looking into buying from the Dell website, but I was also thinking of just dropping into Futureshop or some computer store and looking around.

What I am looking for in the laptop is that it is pretty efficient and has a decent amount of memory (but I guess you can always add on) so that I can have Adobe Photoshop on it. As well, light weight and long battery life would be great It would be nice to have a built-in webcam on the laptop as well. But I've noticed that most Dell laptops don't have that...

// I guess I posted this in the wrong forum, anyone want to move it for me?

Gotta figure out what specs you want, how much you're willing to spend, and the screensize. Then you can start narrowing down your search to the few models that fit those three requirements.

You'll want at least 2gb if you're on Vista, but if you're photoshopping and stuff, 3gb or even 4 would be a good choice.

A bigger screen would be nice for you but if you're needing it to be unplugged frequently then bigger = worse battery life. It's a trade off really. Popular sizes these days are 13.3", 14.1", and 17".

For myself I've been looking at the Sony CR series, which is available in a handful of colors, comes with a decent processor, 3gb of ram, has the built in camera, and overall seems to be a nice bundle for the price. The model is VGNCR520?? w/ the two question marks depending on the color (i.e. DW is for the dove white model).

Get a Mac. Macbook or Macbook Pro will do everything you need.

In before the Apple fanboys show up!!

I wouldn't get a dell, get a toshiba or an Lenovo ThinkPad. New thinkpad is coming out (x200), take a look and see if it meets your needs

I do use a ThinkPad for work, however, and it is pretty solid as well.

Mac's are garbage. Trendy little devices with novel features but hardly the perfect solution they're cracked up to be.

Yes, now that I've retired I don't have a lot else to do, so I thought I'd take up a new moniker on a foreign-based car enthusiast website. Well done on finding me!

Is there a release date on the X200?

What is a good GHZ amount?

// And, is Compaq a good brand? I'm thinking of getting a HP because they are on sale. -lol-

I'd say a minimum 2.0ghz to run things smoothly.
Here is a list of processors from best to worst, might help you a bit.

You really have to tell us how much you want to spend and what size monitor you want or else we can't really help at all. If you want portable, go with 14.1", mid-size 15.4", and gaming 17"

On a side note, anyone know other retailers in Calgary that sells ASUS laptops, or is mem ex the best choice?

so much apple hate in here... :dunno:

Dont get me wrong, I'm not a PC hater at all, but I for one love my MBP... fastest Vista machine that I've ever used.... and its old, the original Intel Core Duo... scores a 4.4 in the Vista Windows Experience index...

And I saw this in at Shoppers the other day, wanna buy it just to read that article:

I don't know much about screen size. I was thinking that the ones you suggested for screen sizes would be sufficient. Well, 17 would be too large for me. So, 14/15 sounds decent. The bigger the screen is in some ways good, but that means, it is a larger item that I have to carry.

As for pricing, I don't want to spend something over $800 dollars for a laptop. I was hoping to get a decent one for around 6/7 hundred dollars, if that is possible. I like the Sony one, but with it being a $1000+, I don't think I can handle that.

If you drive a yellow Boxster, get pedicures/manicures or sit down to pee on the toilet.....then get an Apple Macbook.

If not, get a Thinkpad.
