I am looking to buy a 1999-2000 528it wagon (E39) in very good to excellent shape. Prefer private sale. Would also consider 2001+
525it wagon if the price were right. ***No eastern cars.***

(p.s. I have looked at the one in Redwood Meadows-It's not in very good shape)

(p.p.s. No I don't want a 540)

Thanks,
Ian

You would if you drove one!
Gas mileage isn't much different than the 528's either... around 10L/100km in town and 8.6L/100km on the highway.

Aren't the wagons ultra rare in North America? Especially one with a standard tranmission?

Love the wagon, but having driven the 528 and the 540, I love the 540 much more than the 528/525.

From the E39 Touring brochure, the L/100km figures are:
540iT gets 13.9 city and 10.1 highway (auto only, no manual offered)
528iT gets 12.9 city and 8.3 highway (manual)
528iT gets 12.2 city and 8.4 highway (auto)

Figures printed in brochures are usually optimistic and perhaps even accurate at best.

From the E39 Sedan brochure:
540i gets 15.5 city and 9.2 highway (manual)
540i gets 13.4 city and 8.9 highway (auto)
528i gets 11.9 city and 7.6 highway (manual)
528i gets 12.6 city and [not specified(?)] highway (auto)

The only accurate way is to start with a full tank with a zeroed trip odometer, drive like you normally do until you've used up at least more than half of it, fill up, and then calculate the fuel consumption from the actual number of litres you put in and the distance shown on the trip odometer.

I've had my 6-speed 540i for about a year now and the OBC says I am getting 10L/100km in town and 8.6L/100km on the highway.

I have never even come close to the crappy mileage quoted by the brochure. The worst it ever got was 11.5L/100km in the middle of winter in downtown traffic.

Right now I'm getting a consistant 9.6L/100km commuting downtown. That's better mileage than my old E36 320i!!!

I don't doubt that you can improve on what BMW Canada says, but your OBC reading sounds too optimistic. The only accurate way is to do your own calculation at fill-up time, and averaged over several tanks.

The OBC is pretty acurate.. I hit the trip button and do the math almost every time I fill up... they agree.

The 6-speed manual and the fact that I'm pretty gentle on the pedal probably explains it.

**Just filled up; 572km on 68.3L, which translates to 8.37L/100km. That's even better than the OBC says.
