So for my program it's recommended that I do 20 minutes of HIIT so I hit up the treadmill. AFAIK, the higher the heart rate, the better right? My average was 158.

OK, so I'm sweating my ass off and it's fucking hard and I just want to surrender and go home. My peak heart rate was 232 and several times it was over 200. Is that accurate? Is that right? Is that normal? I'm a fitness n00b but my response when I saw it was,

Insight?

Thanks.

You want to be in the 65-70% max heartrate zone for HIT.

If you're going more and not training for a specific event or sport, you'll be burning more muscle than you need too.

The max recommended HIT training to maintain max muscle is around 2 sessions/wk at 22-25minutes each. 65-70% max HR.

This will put you at slightly better shape than an average person but your muscle mass will put your BMR well above the average.

Having a post HIT cardio shake is a good Idea too. 40G whey with 30G fast carbs usually does it.

Darkane, can you clarify what you mean by 65-70% max heart rate zone for HIT?

First off, how do you calculate one's max heart rate?
I googled and found this

HRmax = 205.8 − (0.685 * age)

So mine would be 205.8 - (0.685*26)= 188

So my average heart rate for my 20 mins of HIT should be around 122-131? So I should take it easier? I would welcome that.....

:dunno:

I will be doing the HIT twice a week. I'm not training for anything, just want to be in better shape and want to do everything the natural way, by the book.

Ya, if you're a young guy you have less to worry about but once you get close to 180-200 for a heart rate, especially if you're 30 or above, usually you'll need to shock the heart to defibulate it and make it come down again. The paddles stop the heart so it can start at a normal pace again. You want to keep your heart rate around 150-160 maximum.

lol, shit I got HIT and LIT mixed up. HIT aim for 80% of Max heart rate, and low intensity aim for 65%.

I'll reduce the levels and monitor my heart rate.

I have found that the HR monitors on machines are hit and miss... I have had very acurate ones, vs. one in particular that is out by 40bpm...

I would suggest if you are serious spend the cake and get a HR monitor or simply take your own pulse and compare it to the machine.

232 sounds really high..that could be an anomally, I would be more concerned if it maintained that rate.

220 - Your age (in years) = Your Predicted Maximum Heart Rate (beats/minute) if you do not have a calculator around

The sensors on tread mill/ cross trainers are not 100% accurate. I have had inctances where my HR shot from100 to 200 in a mtter of a couple minutes and then dropped suddenly to 78. Just from the #'s i thought i was having a heart attack! lol. Your best bet is to get a separate monitor. Thats if you dont have one already, then thats just dard core!
