Nice. I was just thinking the bokeh was very characteristic of a Tessar lens too.

Vignetting is fine, but you went a little overboard with the sharpening.

Are you using Photomatix Pro 3.0? I wanna try some HDR stuff with this prog so since you're an expert with it compared to me, i'll prlly be asking you some questions soon.

your backyard is like buschard gardens!, is your significant other martha stewart or is that all your gardening work? :D

Yes I use 3.0. I don't believe the previous version can open NEF files from the D300. I'd be happy to try answer any questions you have.

That yard belongs to my parents so unfortunately I can't take any credit :) I would never be able to put in the amount of time it takes to up-keep that yard lol. It was in the newspaper recently though and will be featured in some garden magazine soon.

At least on my screen the first couple I posted don't look neon, but I definitely agree the panorama does look quite neon in some places, most notably the grass. I used -2, -1, 0, 1, 2 bracketing on the panorama and only 0.7 bracketing (5 images still) on the first couple, but I'm not sure that would make such a big difference. It might also have something to do with the sunlight on the grass - the first pictures were mostly in the shade, and in the panorama the grass is especially neon looking where the sun hits it. I used pretty much the same Photomatix settings for all the HDRs. Lastly, I ran the NEFs through capture NX first, then made them TIFFS before importing them into Photomatix for the pano, but for the first 2 I posted I just used the straight NEFs so they would not have had any picture control settings applied to them. Saturation and everything would have been increased by Capture NX when I saved them from NEF to TIF so maybe that also had something to do with it. Right now I'm just trying out as many things as I can to find what I like best.

Another thing I can try instead of using "tone mapping" in Photomatix, is to use "Exposure Blending" and that is going to be my next experiment as I can just use all the same files. This should have a much more natural look to it. I'll post it up when I finish it probably tonight sometime and see how it compares.

EDIT: I re-did the pano using exposure blending and the HDR version looks much better and has much more detail in the shadows. I'll try some different scenes and see what happens.

Thanks.

Here is what you do:

- Use a tripod
-Bulb shutter w/cable release if you have one. Press the button and the shutter opens, let go of the button and the shutter closes.
-Varied between ISO 100-200
-F5.6-F11
-Manually set focus to infinity on the lens (I think I used 20-30mm mostly)
-Shoot RAW (incase you badly over or underexpose you can fix it)
- You can always crop, so give yourself more room than you think because you have no idea how big every explosion will be and you don't want to cut it off. I made it so most of the fireworks filled ~3/4 of the frame so incase there was a really big blast I wouldn't miss it.
- Go to the far hill which is directly across from where they launch the fireworks and set up near the top.

Open shutter when you hear the fireworks launching, hold open until the full blast completes (or stop at whatever color you want) then close shutter. Have a look at the picture and adjust settings as necessary if way too bright or way too dark. If you want several different sets of fireworks in one picture, use ISO 100 and F11 or so as a starting point and if the fireworks aren't ultra bright, you can hold open the shutter for ~3-4sec and capture multiple blasts. You will probably want to do this during the last few minutes when they do the finalie. If you want to take some pictures of the fireworks after they have already gone off (sometimes there isn't much time between sets) just open up the aperture a bit and hold the shutter open for a little less time - I got plenty of pictures that look just fine this way. Another obvious point, but careful not to bump your tripod, with such long exposures I ruined a couple pictures this way. Lastly, if you up the contrast a bit in post processing, it gets rid of all the smoke trails and makes the sky jet black behind the fireworks.

It's pretty easy, and I find there is a lot of leeway as far as exposure goes (over/under exposed shots still look pretty good). I'm sure you will do a fine job.

Trying out my first slr from the point and shoot cameras. I have more pictures but still am doing the size and other little things. Thanks to Berserkercatsplat for helping me choose the camera.

probably because your camera is set to Adobe RGB and you didn't convert the pictures to sRGB for the web.

My camera has 3 settings;
I a(sRGB)
II (AdobeRGB)
III a(sRGB)

Which one should I be using? The in-camera help menu states that AdobeRGB should be used on photos that will be edited, while IsRGB is for portraits and IIIasRGB is for landscape.

Oh, and a picture.

Well, there is nothing wrong with using AdobeRGB. As long as you remember to convert your pictures to sRGB before uploading to the web.

I'm not familiar with the difference between Ia and IIIa. You can try both and see which one works better for you.

use sRGB or your colours will look dull when posting to the web.

^^^ Dude tell KY to wash your car.

Nice shot. The clouds are amazing. And HDR shot that I actually don't seem to mind.

Same as above but with inverted Sky. I thought it looked neat.
