When a BMW 335i owner in Munich became bored with his black coupe, he hired a team to wrap it in white tape. Two days later, he drove home in his refreshed "Alpine White" coupe (with an M3-appearing black roof). No, it's not normal tape. It's a special 3M wrap, and the process is known as "foiling." Apparently, the German military has been using the process (with an olive drab tape) for some time now. Likewise, the process is popular with race teams and taxi companies. Available in countless colors, the tape itself is thick enough to protect the paint from minor chips and nicks, and it can be left adhered to the surface for 3-4 years without damage (!). Adhesion isn't a problem either, as the tape can even withstand an automatic car wash without peeling off. Thanks for the tip Frank.

i bet it changes colour in the worse way through winter and such, kinda like a white car with 3m clearbra when it turns yellow.

fk i'd love to change the colour of my car every month.
but how would your registration work , they would get pissed and suspicious after a while.. or just think that you're an autobody specialist with too much time on your hands

that matte black one looks wicked. would be a cool idea i guess to run around with a different color without getting it painted for a few years.

change color every 3-4 years, then when you decide to sell the car, just unwrap it and your paint is mint like the first day you picked it up!!

I wonder how that tape would do .. considering our winters. Interesting concept tho.

it's the same vinyl we used to use at Silent Rage. Never hurt any of the cars (putting on / taking off). Actually had the idea to try this on a couple body kits, but getting it to mould properly would have been a bitch.

Looks pretty sweet IMO. But i'm guessing up close there would be a lot of dust spec's, hair's, bubbling - somethings are impossible to avoid.

If anything it would make it worse. You would not be able to seal every single nook and cranny. The ability of moisture creeping in is there I would imagine. :dunno:

There is special vinyl that I've played with at the shop that is similar to the product used here. It is Avery Brand vinyl that you can get to make stripes, full car wrap or use for designs. This vinyl is used dry unlike the 3M product and is developed so it can be applied with minimal bubbling and creasing. It is pretty tough material as it can stretch a lot before it'll actually tear depending on if the finish is laminated or not. The vinyl is not hard to remove as is it just an adhesive just like normal paint protection. It is not difficult to pull off and does not damage or take up paint as it is being removed. Here is a picture of some stripes that I put on a BMW race car that is suppose to duplicate the BMW race car stripes. If there is an interest for full vehicle wrap, I can look into costs and color availabilities.

This is really not much different than the vinyl we used in the sign shop I used to work at. (Although it appears to follow contours a bit better.) The vinyl we used would last many years. It does scuff fairly easily though, so I hope 3M make the surface a little tougher on this.

The fact it follows the double contours so well though is amazing.

You can hardly tell it was taped at all. Reminds me of the minivan in the movie "The Jackal".

They sell the stuff over here in Korea. You can get nearly any colour under the sun. You can even get designs or patterned stuff too. The nice thing here is that it isn't "3M" and as such is cheaper. I think it might be $12-15/sq.meter. It is the same stuff that sign makers use to lazer cut stickers and decals from. Over here, there are no ghay sign laws. This stuff is used so much that they sell it in most stationary stores.

I've thought about doing this to my car here, but I've never worked with the stuff. If you look at the pic, the guys are stretching it to fit the curves of the car. They gotta be good!

i just had lunch on the Ship and Anchor patio (again) I spotted a lifted Dodge go by with what looked like a great paint job.

The tailgate and side read : Ignitionwraps.com

Obviously not a paintjob, but a local place to wrap your vehicle.

Where can you purchase the 3m tape?

For something like this it will have to come down to the experience of the installers and whether they can do a near perfect job. Also realized that you would have to do inside the door jams, and possibly trunk + engine bay? The whole idea of turning a white car into blue but seeing still seeing white when opening doors/hood/trunk just doesn't seem right. Still if it lasts a good 3-5 years and can withstand our climate, I would totally do this!! A nice alternative to painting the whole damn thing!
