If anyone here is interested, my brother Kevin Sullivan will be competing in the 1500m. The first round is this friday. If you are into middle distance, its possible you've heard of him before. He came 5th in the 2000 Olympics, so hopefully he can put on a good show this year. If you'd like to read his blog on CBC you can find it here... http://www.cbc.ca/olympics/blog/athletes/kevin_sullivan/

Good luck Sully!

You realize our tax dollars don't go to athletes right? Canadian athletes are on their own for sponsorships, etc.

None the less I will be cheering your brother on!

Actually they do get some money, it is next to nothing though. To get more funding you have to win though, which is pretty much impossible with more funding.

I actually hope Canada doesn't win any medals so that the funding of our programs can be looked at again.

That said, I'll cheer for Kev if I actually get around to watching.

How about you STFU? I'd like to see you go out there and place anything other than last in any event. Fifth internationally is something to be proud of.

They get next to nothing from the government to be ambassadors for our country and provide a great boost to our international profile and image. They are great value for money.

The Olympians that I know were only able to get where they are because frankly, they have wealthy parents that could support them from an early age until now. They don't get near as much throughout their careers as athletes in other nations do. Most of them toil, train and sacrifice in obscurity until they get their two weeks in the spotlight every four years.

How about you tell your "friends" to stop competing then. They do not train for 4 straight years just for 2 week competition, they are consistently in world championships and other various events( which by the way are international ) Even winning a bunch of those event but when they arrive at the Olympics they choke.

"great boost to our international profile and image" Ya they show how we are an epic failure in international sports

If pro athletes can take a little scrutiny don't you think our Olympians should be able to handle criticism and rise above it.

No, no... Pretty sure they train for 4 straight years for the Olympics. Various championships just help them. It is like the Superbowl, you train for it, and then there are your regular season games and playoffs till you get there.

You are one of the biggest bench seat Olympian ever. Just making it to the Olympics is an accomplishment. You talk about pro athletes taking scrutiny, but these are amateur athletes. The Olympics is not about boosting your international image or profile, heck it isn't about the countries in general, it is about these athletes going out and showing how hard they worked. You are a fucking moron.

You should really think some of the shit you are saying through, cause you look like an idiot. Yes you will probably just reply to this defending your self, and make yourself look dumb again, so I will just get it over now so I don't have to later.

Your post defending yourself from mine is stupid and you're an A-Class idiot. I can honestly say I have never been more mind boggled from a post. I have heard some dumb shit, even from me, but this is just moronic.

However, after just talking to my mom, she said that he had also made the olympic standard for the 5000m, and was entered into it as a fail safe. He hasn't decided if he will do it or not, but i don't see any reason why not. The 5000m is this Wednesday, so ill keep you all posted on his decision.

Not to mention his reach is 2 inches longer than it should be and feet that are 2 sizes bigger than most of his fellow swimmers (I know this was mentioned, just elaborating). His double jointedness is the biggest thing for him though, it makes him virtually untouchable. I'd hate to be him in 10 or 15 years though, he's going to have such bad arthritis :S

So that makes you qualified to cut down olympians whom you probably have had nothing to do with throughout their lives, including following them and supporting them when they WEREN'T in the olympics? Oh and our "tax dollars" don't really go to 'support' our olympians at all. They are SEVERELY underfunded, especially from the government. US olympians get something crazy like $300,000 for a gold medal. Ours get $20,000. That doesn't even pay for their rent and food for a year (let alone 4 years) not to mention their training and expensive coaches. Get off your high horse and cheer their valiant efforts or don't bother turning on your TV at all.

If pro athletes can take a little scrutiny don't you think our Olympians should be able to handle criticism and rise above it.

reasons you are an ignorant douchebag:

1. International competition is pretty fierce, placing fifth is nothing to be ashamed of when the world has 7 billion people.

2. If Canada did put the funding in like say the U.S. and China this year, we could expect more athletes competing which would in turn create more medals.

3. Not everyone can place on the podium.

4. Look at the population the U.S. has, 300 000+ when Canada has 30 000+? Do the math retard.

What does your athletic ability have to do with anything? Why aren't you competing in the olympics Andy Athlete? I also suppose registering on a car forum in '05 makes your athletic skills that much more potent.

Ya its an epic failure for canada! Not the athlete himself he was not a favorite to place anyways. So at least I hope he had a good time to say the least. Its more of an epic failure to all the athletes who were supposed to win gold and did nothing. And I can't be in the olympics since my sport is still not in it.

Actually the USOC only gives $25g for Gold, $15g & $10g for silver and bronze respectively. Where the athletes get their real money from is sponsorship after they win, but so do our own people.
