So since this thing didn't come with all the necessary parts to make it run and drive I have some work to do.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/2651367059_9d9648f687_b.jpg

Before I make the thing go I better make it stop. The car was originally fitted with 8-piston monobloc Brembos. Newman/Haas decided they were still good for spares so they retained the ~$4K ea. calipers when they sold the car. The also kept the rediculously expensive shocks and Cosworth only leased their engines to the teams so that is missing as well. Other than that it's pretty much all there.

So to get some 6-piston billet Wilwoods on the car I'm going to need an adaptor bracket. First I need to get the wheels off the damn thing. Too bad it didn't come with tools, I guess they decided they were still useable. ;)

I think there's a wheel nut socket in there.

All finished.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/Wheelnutsocket15.jpg
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/Wheelnutsocket14.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/Wheelnutsocket17.jpg

So now that I can remove the wheels I can get started on the brake caliper adaptors. Looks like it should be fairly straightforward.

Step 1, make sure the calipers will even fit.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/P1020083.jpg
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/P1020082.jpg

And that they clear the inner diameter of the wheels.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/LUNT13.jpg

This is where the adaptor is needed.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/P1020081.jpg

I started with 1x1 6061 which had already been anodized. The two holes farthest apart are for the existing mounting holes on the Champ Car uprights. The two holes closest together are for the Wilwood caliper mounting points.

Adaptor mounted to upright.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/P1020097.jpg

Caliper mounted, those bolts are CLOSE!
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/P1020100.jpg
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/P1020101.jpg

Wheel mounted, damn that's close but it clears.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/P1020105.jpg

When I started this little project I didn't have any hardware to bolt the three parts together. I only had the existing studs and two nuts. I ended up machining four holes inline with each other on the centerline of the bracket. It turns out that that positioned the caliper too far outboard and the inner pad would not fit. I scrapped the first bracket and started another with the caliper holes machined .150" inboard of the upright mounting holes.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/Frontbrakes012.jpg

The bracket is mounted wrong in these two pics, the offset goes away from the rotor.

So I went out to put the car back together and decided to take a look at the rears to see what I'd have to do to get calipers mounted. It looked exactly the same so I did a test fit.

My job just got a whole lot easier. :)

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/rearbrakes007.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/rearbrakes005.jpg

It spins freely, no rubbing.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/rearbrakes003.jpg

Now I just to need to machine three more adaptors and order up some calipers and it'll stop. After I fab a brake pedal.............

Stay tuned for the next update.

Thanks for the kind words fellas. It's hard to imagine the hours that go into designing and making the first part and getting it to work. When you look at a machined part you don't appreciate all the time that went into it, at least the first time around. The first part took almost 4 hours with all the measuring, sketching, test fitting etc. The second part (with the correct dimensions) took about 2 hours while the final three copies each took only an hour or so.

The current options for the powerplant are:

Custom R1 V8 with 35R

Built 20B with a 35R or 37R

Built VG30DETT with a single turbo, 37R or larger

is the 20B you were referring to the triple rotor ?

if so, use that ! ! !

Yes, my friend has a complete tri-rotor 20B with harness and ECU that he never got around to swapping into his old RX-3. It would be sweet with a single turbo but if I can make the R1 V8 come to life that is my first choice.

haha, yeah a little work is right when you think of all that's still to come. Most people don't have access to this type of equipment and I rarely see projects with this much custom work posted online so I thought I'd share mine with the folks here at beyond. I'm sorry you're not impressed.

I'm toying with the idea of building a custom crankcase to house a custom crankshaft to make an R1 V8. My friend is really pushing a 20B single turbo option on me but then I say why not a 26B? The powerplant route is still undecided.

26b, as in quad rotor ! ?

quad rotor would be too long, and the cost of the crankshaft would probably exceed the cost of the rolling chassis...speaking of which how much was the roller if you don't mind?

Here is a link to a 4 rotor already in an open wheeler and on the road

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHM8aw8Hhv0&feature=related

Jim Downing has done a few 4 rotor track cars:

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=dowing+rotor&search_type=&aq=f

For an original Mazdaspeed shaft you are looking at +$10k. If you go peripheral ported - and at that point you should - you have to consider new housings, etc. Kiwi RE makes a 4 rotor kit that has been used but there is some concern with the oiling of the e-shaft. A 4 rotor is a little longer than the 20b but not as much as a full extra rotor would suggest. The 20b has a large intermediary iron whereas on the 4 rotor all the irons on the same width. There is a difference but not as big as you would think.

Ain't that the truth. You forgot to mention the cost of the ECU. Not many can handle the 4 rotors - Motec M800 would be the best bet but it's not cheap. All said and done a proper 4 rotor build would exceed $30k.

Wow, this is brilliant! Props man.

One thing I'm worried about is thermal expansion on the calipers. I hope the rotors can dissipate enough heat so it doesn't affect the calipers. But the pads should be what carbon Kevlar? so those won't transfer the heat to much.

2M6
08-19-2008, 06:33 PM
The calipers should be fine. I had the set on my 300ZX TT and it weighed a lot more than this car will weigh and had very little brake cooling mods. With the cooling ducts and lightweight I think they will be just fine.

Remember guys, this car will not be driven as hard or for as long as it was designed so the overall life of parts should be increased significantly.

This past weekend my brother and I made another tool for the car.

It lifts the car a bit high off the ground but I wanted to wait until I get the shocks installed before I mess with shortening the stand height.

Awesome project!

Maybe bring back the VG motor since your last VG is no longer with you.

Unfortunately the VG is not an option. There are no ratios available to make use of an engine with a 7500 RPM rev limit. I am currently working on fitting multiple Yamaha R1 engines (sans gearboxes) into the car. :)

That said I do plan to be in another '90 Super White Twin Turbo Z as soon as possible.

Good on you for getting another Z :)

Wasn't the Fiero also getting a couple of bike motors? I forget now but how did that pan out?

Both Hayabusa motors were lost in the fire.

What an awesome build, I love the fact that you're in a "normal" garage and not some crazy $200 000 shop. Your neighbours must wonder who is this guy? I'd love to do a quick test run in that car on the street.

I remember looking through the "other section" of the show your ride off section.

Wicked updates, and some really crafty craftsmanship on your stand etc.

Good work, I'm envious, looks like a lot of fun. Just taking the DD to work, as your getting into it, looking over and glancing at the race car in your garage lol!
