I was just accepted for a position at a large well known company, but they have to do a check. I have an assault charge from back in 1998 when I was 18. Am I screwed?

Anybody gotten a GOOD job with a record from 10 years ago??

Thanks

Simple assault from when you were 18? Were you convicted? Just explain to them what happened, you were young and dumb blah blah... otherwise pay the buxxx for a pardon.

I don't know if its still on there, Ive been over the border (even stopped and searched and the cop didnt mention it). Also, back when it happened they didnt even take my prints :dunno:

Yet I got pulled over last year and the cop asked if I had been in trouble with the law before, I said no, then he comes back and asked why I lied to him (although he then said I had a DUI? Which I don't/never have as my license was expired (he thought the worse, I guess).

I think your gonna be okay...if they ask you just say no you have no record and if it comes up tell them it was before 18

I don't think they're going to care about something like that. I doubt my company would.

When I was to Hire someone a criminal back check would go back years, If the person let us know about it before we did the search they would be fine, if we found out about it they would be fired on the spot. Let them know just in case.

In that case, you were convicted. Unless you were pardoned, a criminal record will show up.

Now I am hearing they usually only check back 2-3 years? Even 7 years back and I'll be OK.

Can you wait 5 business days?Go to the Police, they have specific times to go in and get a Criminal Record Check done, they mail you the results.
I had guys come in and tell me they had no record, we did a check and they had a long history of whatever, it will show if you were convicted.

A criminal background check done by a municipal police department may not catch offenses that took place in other jurisdictions.

A criminal backgruond check done by the RCMP will catch offenses that took place in every jurisdiction in Canada registered with the RCMP.

Any criminal background check will show all convictions that occurred. You can't lay low for a couple years and expect to have no implications from being a convict.

This page (http://www.johnhoward.ab.ca/PUB/A5.htm) has good information. Unless you're getting bonded, just be honest and I don't think it'll matter, especially simple assault at 18. If only you were 17 at the time, you'd have no worries :)

Criminal records are not like bad credit...they don't go back "2-3 years"...they are there for life unless you get a pardon.

I have never heard of someone being arrested and charged and NOT fingerprinted...that doesnt make any sense unless you were only held under suspicion, not actually charged.

From Friends:
Joey: Rach, you gotta find out if he's in the same place you are. Otherwise, it's just a moo point.

Rachel: A moo point?

Joey: You know, like a cow's opinion. It doesn't matter. It's moo.

Rachel: Have I been livin' with him too long or did that make sense?

To Op, congrats!
