View Full Version : Shaw High Speed VS Lite

Can anyone tell me the differences between the two? I mean, with some detail?

I know the lite is slower, but how much slower? Would it only make a difference if you are a big online gamer or downloaded a lot of big files? Do they use the same hardware (modem) and just put a limiter on it or something?

I'm moving at the end of the month, and just considering my options...

Thanks in advance for any help and info! :)

From my understanding -- I thought it was dial-up....

Lite speed is not dialup, but it is slower than High Speed. Lite Speed is about 5x faster than dialup. It is no where near as fast as high speed cable.

They both use similar setups.

Thanks for the info guys. :)

Making these decisions suck... Lite Speed is 25 bucks a month, but only if you subscribe to basic cable, which makes it 40 a month. Thing is, I don't watch TV.

On the other hand, High Speed can be 30 bucks a month for 6 months, but then goes up to 43 a month.

DSL is out because I don't have/want a land line...

Any other suggestions/comments/ideas? I know the shaw vs telus debate has been beat to death, so we don't have to get into that... ;)

I've used Lite Speed at my friends house, got 13-15K/sec downloading. Bring his computer (Yes, his entire computer) to my house and get 100-120K/sec downloading.

after you buy the modem for $69.95 and you get $16.95/month for 6 months then it goes up to like $34.95...

and the hell with Shaw Lite Speed, it uses the same setup as high-speed, but they control it from there or something, but it downloads at speeds like 14k, it all depends on how many people have it on your street

They throttle the bandwidth to control the speed on their end. It has nothing to do with how many people have it on your street... you'll get congestion at the backbone level before you get congestion at your cable segment level.

Shaw lite is just like high speed, but they have a throttle to limit you to 15K/sec (5 times dialup speed) It will ALWAYS be 15K/sec, no matter who's using it in your neighbourhood. My father in law has it (took forever to pry his dialup modem out of his claws) and he is too cheap to buy the full high speed.

Technically it should be ok for games - counterstrike, etc all use about 5-6K/sec per player. But downloading mp3s, videos etc is very painful. Even looking at forums on his machine is slow.

It's more the improved latency that makes online gaming shine, even though top speed is still capped.

There was an article in the news a couple weeks ago that said that telephone companies had to start offering internet services to all people, and not just to those that had a land line.

Did you call Telus to find out if they would hook you up without the land line?

I know telus is working on sdsl or idsl - dedicated pair, so no residential phone line is needed... but it's not available yet.

Lite-Speed = Long wait for porn

High-Speed = Much much quicker

I think it is pretty clear now isn't it??? :D

I think theres another deal with Telus the one I got a couple of months ago.

$24.95 for one year after you buy the modem, then its normal price. Ask for that, they might give it to you.
