Do we have any Fire Fighters here on beyond?

I am thinking about making a new career choice and have been debating this one for a long time.

I have read the cities web site but would like to talk first hand with some people to find out more.

Thanks guys.

I forget his name on here although, jay911 is close and he has a Subaru Imprezza for an Avatar. He is volunteer in the Bragg Creek area as well as a dispatcher full time.

he could have some solid info for you.

Check the website as well for CFD. They will have all requirements posted.

hockeybronx can probably help you out. Not sure if he still browses Beyond though.

I would advise trying to score a ride along for a night. Its a blast a really helps you see what its all about. Also follow the webpage for all recruitment information.

I am in the beginning stages of applying

Is there a demand at the moment? Or is it pretty full?

There is always a demand for public sector people whether its CPS, EMS, or CFD

All i know is that competition is extreme for any firefighting job, you pretty much have to be over qualified and have to be a saint. I've personally looked into it but i realized it's alot of work to make 43k a year. But it's the type of profession that is more noble than money. The least you would need is a medical background, Emergency medical responder or better. Most guys have an EMT or Paramedic qualifacation. I'm not sure if calgary requires their guys to have the NFPA 1001 standard (basic firefighters training) but it does help alot on the resume.
vermillion has a course that gives you that ticket

class 3 or better with air endorsement is a must. gotta drive firetruck. Volunteer work looks good and you get more training out of it. gotta be crimal activity free, they do a security clearence. 2 of my buddies are fire guys and my friend's old man is a captain.

forgot to mention it cost money to apply to CFD also you take a polygraph. if you get caught lying. you are done meaning any future applications will be tossed out the window. Having a trade does help out a bit but doesn't mean they'll take someone in open arms. If you are seriously looking into firefighting, be prepared to give it all you got and not be guaranteed a job. also note for emergency medical training you can take that at sait.

Yes, there is a fairly intense application process but if you've got a clean record and are physically fit, they want you! All the old guys are retiring, and they're starving for new guys.

My dad used to be a firefighter at Esso refinery back in the day. He's got some pretty good stories :)

My teacher got accepted into the final stages of becoming the firefighter, and from what he told me, it's not easy. Pretty intense, think cut after cut after cut. Nothing is promised, yet the work put in is intense.

After they he found out he'd pretty much would be a firefighter after all the "testing" he got accepted into air traffic control school, so after all the testing he walked out on firefighting, he said they were pissed, because, well they invested their time into him, and cut other guys. When he was in Ottawa (i think) training, he realised that it wasn't for him and said fuck it, left that and taught again.

WTF? Where does that yellow bucket near the back of the flipped truck come from? It looks like it appears out of no where.

Contacting CFD Recruiting is probably a good place to start, they have their own section of the department and I'm sure would give you lots of good info. You could try the main administrative switchboard at 403-287-4299 to get transferred to them (or have the receptionist give you the right #). I don't recall their website off the top of my head but it's probably linked from calgaryfire.ca.

Another option to look at is the Municipal District of Rockyview Fire Service. They are expanding pretty rapidly right now and although I don't know if they're actively hiring, I know a bunch of my department's volunteers have gotten on with them at various stations - Springbank, Balzac, and Chestermere to name a few. Rockyview's main office is 403-230-1401, ask for Fire Services.

cops start at 55000 and within 5 years you are at 72k. still not very much but alot better then FD.

BTW: i see these numbers changing very soon.

Sophal

Pay Scale for CPS

5th Class Constable $ 52,021.07
4th Class Constable $ 55,036.78
3rd Class Constable $ 64,083.92
2nd Class Constable $ 70,115.34
1st Class Constable $ 75,392.85

Before it was the same at 43k / year guess it went up. Before when the pay scale was equal, the applicants that didn't get accepted into the fire dept. ended up with the police service. Cops that apply into the Fire dept. usually have their applications tossed out. sooo if you wanna be a fireman don't be a cop first.

^ those numbers are not accurate. the police service messes with them a little bit, it is actually i bit higher. maybe some police members can comfirm but i dont believe they include court or pay duty time in those numbers. court time is huge, they dont want people applying because of the salary, so they make the numbers seem low to avoid those guys that are in it for the money.

smart if you ask me, it weeds out most of the money hungry fools.
