I have finished high school and am wondering the best way to go about becoming a automotive mechanic. Is there any shops that will take you without having any certificates and train you, or would I have to take a program at sait or somewhere? Thanks in advance.

you have 2 options that will get you in the door.

1. start as lube tech, after a year most places will apprentice you.

2. take the program at sait that when done you have your first 2 years done of schooling and only need to get the hours, and this way you only go back to school twice to finish your licence

there are someplace that will hire you on as an apprentice right off but very very rare.

Get a job with either FORD or GM, FORD has the ASSET program which a fast track to get your license, GM has the same thing but its called ASSEP, believe it or not FORD has some of the best technician training in the industry.

The program is a partnership with SAIT in which you get all your training done in 2 years, including all the shop hours needed. Now getting enrolled in those programs can be kinda hard since most of they guys there are second and third year lube guys who have finally been asked to start their apprenticeship, but most will tell you its worth it.
Also with FORD you graduate with all your specialties, allowing you to receive a cut above the rest.

Forget light duty. Try a heavy duty shop. The pay is better, Start around 15-18, and you make more money as a journeyman.

So would it be a better idea to do the sait program then? 12/hour for changing oil is less then I get at home depot  Also wouldn't it be more fun to be a light mechanic as your work on normal cars as opposed to semi's?

hard to get into anything more then lube at most shops with no experiance or schooling.

1st year aprentices were making 16 or 17/hr at crowfoot dodge when I was there.

In my honest opinion, I would start off as a lube tech at a dealer of your preference if you plan on building a career there then it's perfect. Get hired and work hard you have to prove that you are worthy of them signing you on as an apprentice. Working as an apprentice is better because you gain invaluable experience that you can apply when you get to school.
