Well, just bought myself a 96 Civic EX 4-door Sedan, MT, and I'm having some trouble finding what engine it has (stock, obviously). Some sources I check say I have V-TECH, others say I don't (the satisfying "V-TECH" letters are not present on the actual engine itself).Any help, beyonders?

Well the good news is if your engine doesn't have v-tech, you can pick it up for pretty cheap, just head on down to walmart and ask an employee for it.

I keep one in my living room and one in the garage.. I didn't know I could use it in the car, but it is the 5.8 v-tech...

look at your engine and look at what numbers it gives (b18/b16) etc etc

I think the most embarrassing part is that you spelled embarrassing wrong. That and the fact that you are hoping to own a car with v-tech one day. I only wish my dream car was a v-tech powered civic. I could have obtained my dream years ago.

I was originally under the impression that (because of the absence of the V TECH logo) I did not infact have VTECH (hence the signature), but tonight I decided to look into it to be sure, couldn't find a engine identification sticker under the hood (found one but no number found on the sticker was consistant to the list of honda engines) so I'm lost :nut: . Also, a engine ID number would be nice (ie. D16Y7) as opposed to "it has teh vtechs" or "it has not teh vtechs", lol.

You're overloading the vtechs-o-meter.

I think this is just done as a joke, but anyway, to find out there should be a code on the block like mentioned above, if you don't know what the codes mean or where they are located, check google, honda-tech or pretty much any import forum and they will have the codes and which ones had vtec.

I doubt that. The EX for sale in the US is the Si for sale in Canada, which does have VTEC. There is a huge mix-up with Honda trim levels between Canada and the US. I think our EX is the US LX, which would not have come with VTEC from the factory.

Nope, check his join date. Plus I only said I had 5.8 v-tech but since I have 2, thats really 11.6 worth of v-tech.. So I mean.. come on.. :burnout:

if your car is faster than a smart car, then it is non-vtec. If it is faster than a taurus station wagon - then it's vtec

Just go out and do a redline pull. If at any moment you feel the urge to yell VTEC KICKED IN YO then you probably have it.

Hey give the guy a break, at least he has the most descriptive thread title I've seen on here in a long time

There should be a sticker on your timing belt cover that will tell you the engine code. It is either D16Y7 or D16Y8. The Y7 is not vtec and makes 106hp and the Y8 is vtec and makes 127hp.

Ok, first off. Before posting something like that on here, do you're own research first, just to save you some flamage.
Information you're pertaining to is not difficult to google... AT ALL.
There is an engine stamp on the block or your engine. They are typically located to the left of the exhaust manifold a little bit lower. It should say d16y7 or d16y8 and so fourth. You might have to use some brake cleaner to clean that area so you can see the stamp.
To save you the effort. If you claim that your is in fact a 1996 civic EX sedan, then it does come with a d16y8 engine which is equipped with a "Single overhead Vtec system"...lol not gutts whatsoever.... although you can turbo charge the shit out of you car but you'd have to upgrade everything in your engine internally.

Nah. I'm not that well informed on cars, but I know a thing or 2. I actually got a good laugh out of everyones responses, realizing how dumb I phrased everything. The engine sticker is totally worn so I figured beyond would help me out; got a little more than I bargained for, haha :banghead:
