Yahoo you draft players and have to modify your bench/positions daily. It is high maintenance, and it was pretty annoying when several people stopped playing 1-2 months into the season, which really screwed everything for the others playing.

It is a lot of fun if you are committed to it.

It is an actual draft. Only 1 Crosby, Ovech, etc.

Trades are unlimited, but don't happen too often.

Roster moves (free agent pick-ups) are the popular way to improve. As each team will carry 20-25 players, there is a huge FA pool.

But you only have 82 games available in each position, so once you max out your games you don't get any more.

so when you say 82 games per position you are saying that i could go 60 games in the season and have all 82 games finito for my RW or something?

If so - why dont you change that?

why dont you just have one spot for each position open and the rest as bench players

or have designated positions per night.

Can we please look at the 82 game max? To me it makes no sense because if you have say 2 wingers you can have a total of 164 games.

Since if your wingers are healthy they'll likely play 150-160 combined games themselves, having an extra winger on your bench seems kind of worthless esp if it's a player just as good as your other two wingers - it's like you almost get punished for drafting well or having a deep bench because someone who has no depth but just 2 good wingers can do just as well as you.

And not having the 82 limit doesn't lead to circumventing the system either - I think in most leagues the 82 game rule gets put in so people can't trade away their whole roster to keep loading up on players that play a lot and do that over and over and over. In this case if someone trades away a player there'll be enough other players in the pool that will just scoop that player up.

the limit of 82 is really to stop people from dropping/adding guys all the time. it really makes things fair, and it a great equalizer. it is the standard default setup for yahoo pools. so one guy doesn't have 120 games used, while everyone else has 82.

the roster last year looked like this:

2LW

2W (LW or RW)
1F (LW, C or RW)
5D
1utility (W, C or D)
2G
5 bench spots
2 IR spotse (injured players)

so you have 164 games to use at center, etc. the W/F/Util positions let you manipulate the bench a bit and make full use of your players.

if there are more than 12 teams we might have to cut down the roster size though.

HMM, im not too sure what you mean by dropping then picking up players, if this happens couldnt someone pick up one of their players they dropped? Or do people mostly do this for the Util spot or just lower grade players.

If someone can get more games out of the spots why not let them?

If they are working on their team and making moves how is that unfair? if they stay on top of it they deserve the points they get?

But if anything you could just enforce the rule that there is no game manipulating?

I'm in football/hockey/basketball pools every year and i've never seen this rule enforced, it just seems kinda hokey to me

Don't do max games!!!!!

That's a dumb rule..... you should be able to maximize games played by following the schedule of teams. I've been in several other yahoo pools that don't use the max games played and they've been just fine. If your dropping/picking up players like crazy then someone else can come in and pick up your dropped players like analbumcover said.

You can put a cap on 'moves' so people aren't dropping/picking up players every other day. Say max 75 or 100 moves?

i dont know what you mean by slot whoring

everyone has the same amount of players and positions and each player has the opportunity to play each game of the season therefore if you set your lines each day and pay attention to the season you will be successful, and that makes a good nhl hockey pool champion.

if you just want to pick your players and float through without making changes then go waste someone elses time.

I hate joining pools where players don't set their lines etc, it makes it less competitive and less fun to compete, there is no pride in winning.

Also, anyone up for the pool to be set up as VS.

Basically each day of the week your players matchup against another teams players and you get points based on team Goals/Assists/GWG/plus-minus/save %/ Saves/Wins/Shots etc.

i always liked that kind of pool because it makes it more personal..

but thats just my opinion :)

no i'm all for setting lines...but i'm also for drafting players that will always occupy their respective slots until injury..hence why i won last years pool in the last few days/weeks...an awesome draft, a keen eye on the fa pool, and patience as i knew that in the end the max games would screw people...

personally i think taking out max games takes a bit of strategy out of the game, cus then like i said its just brute force slot filling, whereas with max games you're forced to decide if maybe for a game or two you want to swap in/out a player due to a favourable/unfavourable matchup...ie the opportunity cost of putting the right player in the right slot occurs

but i'm down for either because in either case the rules apply to everyone making it fair

I love the sporting news pools.... me a couple buddies did the ultimate pay one this year and it's way better.
