I was talking to a guy today and was seriously considering his 07 'vette - at least until he told me that the price did not include GST.

So I asked him what he meant by that, and he said that the Alberta govn't now requires private individuals to collect GST and remit it to them when they sell their cars

Good to know! :nut:

don't you have to be a registered business and have a GST number to legally be able to collect GST for the government?

So the provincial govt requires him to collect and pass on to them a federal tax?

He's either a curber with a business (not necessary registered auto dealership resale license), otherwise you should snitich on him for saying that trying to scam ppl.

the gst would have been payed when the car was sold from the dealer to the customer.

Useless comment.

GST can be collect several times off the same car if buying from a used dealer/lot or what ever.

But him being a private sale does not require him to collect gst unless he is a registered buisness and has a gst #. Sounds like he was trying to scam you.

They have this in Sask. Sell a car privately, you are required to collect PST. Never heard of this here though.

The PST thing is the same in any province that has it, total BS though.

GST on a private sale = kick in the nuts!

The way it works back east is, you pay the tax when you resister.. So every time a car is sold, they collect tax of the value of it, by the book, not what you say.. Unless you get an appraisal.

the whole process = teh suck
