How do you find the maintenace on your cars? The reason I ask is I have two VPs at my company that own benzs one with a C class AMG and the other with a SUV. They seem to break alot. They always seem to be complaining about there cars being in the shop??? Are they just complainers or does benz make some lemons?

SLK 230 - Other than the red interior getting dirty easily, there are no unscheduled maintainance problems.

SLK 320 - Fan controller thingy broke once, fan won't shut off, drained battery, needed tow, etc. Trunk liner too thick, rubbed against C pillars (the back window one), replaced liner and repainted pillars. All under warranty.

I heard the C Classes vary by car, most people have zero problems, but there are a few with issues, mostly interior stuff. There was an issue with the C 32 AMG, something to do with the supercharger control fuse blowing up, so the intercooler isn't active or something. That's the only engine related issue I've seen.

The ML's, stay away from the ML's. They're just nightmare on quality I heard (pre 2000 facelift).

ML's are not made in germany, I think its the US, that could explain all the problems with them. I know the first year (97 i think) were really problematic.

My dad had a 2001 ML 430 and it was plauged with problems. He ended up trading it in for an 02 Escalade.

http://www.mercedes-benz.com/amg/e/cars/kleinserie_c32.htm

It's a AMG Special right now, meaning it's a special order car for the European market. We might see it here. It's only 50 lbs heavier than the SLK 32, but it's got the updated suspension and brakes from the current C platform.

I love hatchbacks, ranks right behind roadsters.

:) IMHO I like the look of the c32 coupe (non-hatchback) model more... but i know a few ppl with 98/99 ML 320s and ML 430s. ppl with the 320's seem to all report them as real lemons.:thumbsdow

You'll be waiting a LONG time. It'll show up in Canada about 1 year after announcement, if they even do decide to bring it to the North American market.

The whole auto thing also bugs me and would rule out that car. now a m3 with an SMG is a whole different story  or maybe a used NSX. :hitit:

What if you import a C32 sport coupe from Europe and slap on a C230 badge on it and register it as a C230?

BTW, why is the sport coupe still using the old engine?

The 2.3L Supercharged 4 cylinder is still a current engine.

What about the 2.4???

rage2

If you're talking about the C240 it's a 2.6L V6 normally aspirated. It makes about 40hp less than the 2.3L I4 SC engine.

Er, right. Forgot about the SC. :banghead:

the quality of MB vehicles have gone down drastically as they continue to diversify their product lines. There has been many articles pointing out this quality drop.

There is a collection of articles regarding MB quality here (http://mbspy.bacosys.be/mbquality.htm)

As for the SLK, I have yet to encounter any major problems worth noting. There are a lot of picky stuff that I have had fixed such as a mirror that vibrates too much when the bass is too high and a drivers door that didn't quite close completely which caused a bit of wind noise. I had a bulb burn out 3 days after I picked up the car too, but that could have just been a bad bulb. So yeah, nothing major so far! (fingers crossed).

I have a 1999 ML 320 and have not had very many mechanical problems. I have never had to get it towed and it has been very dependable. Most of the stuff I have had to get fixed is because I have very picky. They are mostly rattles and stuff. The way I see it, if you drop that kinda money on a car, you expect it to be perfect.

The friggin early model MLs are shite.. Quality of construction is exteremely and the parts are not durable.

On top of the construction issues, the tail end always slides out without warning on ice.

only the 1998 that don't have ESP on them. ESP was an option in the first production year which was 1998. It was standard starting in 1999.
