Hi all, just looking for a little advice about buying a Subaru engine.

A couple of weeks ago my engine crapped out on me on the way home from work. The mechanic I took it to said the engine is not salvageable and that he would find me a good used motor for my car.

The price with swap out is going to be $4000.00 on an engine with 178k but in good running order.

Does this seem reasonable (my wife crapped her drawers when I told her)?

If not, what should a good rebuild cost me for this car and where in western Canada could I get one?

Thanks, ShawnL

Get a lower mileage motor for starters.

Call these guys:

Thanks bad.

Mileage does seem too high.

I'll call JDM and see what they say.

That may have been the problem to begin with...

check out nasioc.com or westernsubaruclub.com for engine resources. jdmsource can get you the engines but is not very knowlegdable in subaru engines. they are a great vendor tho. if you do get their engine just look up the engine code on ravens-blade impreza (search for it on the net) to see if its a matching engine.

Just curious how many km's were on your engine and what went wrong? I'm running a 2001 as well and bought it not too long ago.

my buddy pulled his 2001 2.5RS engine out for a wrx swap and he's got the 2.5 kicking around still. Would you like me to ask him how much he'd be willing to part with it for? Guaranteed he's not looking for anywhere near $4k. PM me if you're interested. Knowing me, I'll forget to ever check this thread for a reply.

Not sure what went wrong but definitely didn't expect to buying a motor for it so soon. My mechanic says he'll try and give me an idea of what the cause was but I'm not expecting much. (Let you know if he can determine cause)

Definitely the kind of info I'm looking for.

I checked JDM's inventory and they don't have a 2.5RS in stock but I'll check the sube club and nasioc and see what I can find.

You could probably find one on www.rs25.com...but it will probably be in the states.

You could also try http://www.blackgoldimportautoparts.com/

And expand your search to Legacy 2.5L as well...i think the engine is essentially the same.

For 4K, is he rebuilding it too?

My parents got a 2.5L Subaru engine from a '99 legacy for our '97 legacy with 35 000KM for just over $1000, no rebuild. $4000 does seem a little high for 178K
