Already am not enjoying...
That and my prof has the heaviest swedish accent or something of the sorts. What the fuck am I going to use complex numbers in real life for?

Yeah I have Norbert Sauer... I mean I think he will be ok if I preread my text book like he said to do.

My buddy has some crazy black guy. He started by just yelling and talking a mile a minute for his lecture. No assignments, nothing, all their marks come straight from midterm and final.

I forget the name of the great Linear teacher, all I can remember is his appearance. Long blonde hair, taller dude, shitty old street clothes and looks like he can shred a mean guitar! I'm sure someone will know who I'm referring to.

Holland.

211 is ok, just be thankful that you dont have to do 311

Yeah my buddy has him.

Yeah I am in engg. Worst part too Sauer said that since there is more bio and natural science kids in our class, he isn't going to bother with proofs. I am pretty sure I need to know about that right?

you dont want proofs, thats what 311 is all about. Just follow instructions on how to solve each matrix/model and you'll do fine. Proofing is the hard part imo

Doesn't Holland have dark hair? Regardless, I had Grandpa Sauer as well. Darius Holland should do porn. Facebook group >>

I thoroughly agree, solving matrices is the most useful thing you'll use now. For example, on your ENGG205 final, use it to solve for a massive beam/truss problem that will scare you upon first glance.

In addition, electrical engg has lots of complex numbers in it, as well, you can use a matrix to describe a linear circuit and solve for the unknowns in your network.

Odd, I just checked the calendar and they don't have MATH221, same thing as 211, just with only your first year engg group with you. How gay.

You'll be lucky if he doesn't bother with proofs. All he spent doing with us was proofs that had nothing to do with any test/exam material....ended up having to bust ass trying to learn the shit from the internet. I got an A though, so my advice is just learn and memorize all the webwork questions because that's what he bases the tests off of.

I liked him. Made some subtle jokes here and there. MATH dept runs continuous tutorials on 5th floor MathSci, very helpful if you get confused or need clarification on something (like what are two unique solutions to x^2 = i)

Linear algeraba is by far the most important shit to learn if you want to do any programming and also makes mechanical analysis a hundred times easier by using Lagrange and Hamiltonian methods. Trust me you try solving 6 springs all bound together with Newtonian physics.

Also imaginary numbers are CRUCIAL for signal analysis and analysis of anything that moves (PDE's, ODE's). What would the world be with out Fourier transforms?

As for the proofs, don't worry about that just concentrate on solving and manipulating matrices. If you ever plunge into solid state and have to learn a bunch of Quantum then the proofs are a little more important.

^^ what he said. it seems like a bitch now, but later on you'll see the importance of the material in this course.
People who say it's useless obviously don't have jobs requiring the use of it.
I know the higher level pure math courses and graphics courses required extensive knowledge of linear algebra just to perform primary calculations.
Since you're in engg, tough it out, you'll see the course in a different light later down the line.

I had linear algebra from Sauer back in 1999 and it kicked my ass. I think I got a D+
thank gawd I'm an oil and gas engineer and I don't use matrices in my job, because I never really understood them.

holland is a good prof, but he has gay webworks, and his miderms/finals are crazy hard

whose a good prof for 321 or 311? man i got a A+ in 251 last year, and a whopping C+ for 211.... maybe cuase i didnt do shit all in that class?

I went to one class of linear algebra a month, never studied for more than 30 seconds, and came out with an A-

I don't think it was that tough...... but maybe that's just me.

I still use linear algebra with helping me write my code for cpsc. Never thought I would use the dot product ever.

omg i fucking hated sauer SOO much

it took me 4 lectures before i realized zeeta was theta
but then again it was 8am tues/thurs

midterm was worth 26% and it was 26 marks.
i got 6/26

worked my ass off and pulled a C

was I in your class? the midterm i took was out of 26 too, I remember doing pretty good in that class... 22/26 on midterm and the final was almost identical to a previous one so I think I aced that.

also I love how when a student corrects his mistakes he always says that hes too old haha

Holland aka Tarzan is the fucking shit, I had him for Amat 307, he does tonnes of examples.
For 211 or 221 as it was called 3 yrs ago I had Aiffa, he was decent but went really slowly so we missed the entire eigenvalues chapter.

Well I moved on to AMAT issues, bigger than 211. I don't know shit in AMAT (with aiffa).

It sucks cause it is like highschool calculus but way harder questions, so I know the steps to do it, just not that hard of a question

I am just going to go to his office hours and get help since the free tutoring in rez doesn't start till next week.

Fuck engineering sucks...

Speaking of this class, anyone got the textbook for it?

what school did you go to

Notre Dame High School up north

I had a really good Math31 teacher as well, got 89 in the class. I know how to do the questions, but I don't know some of the shit like factoring x^4+3x^3+11x+34 (made those numbers up).
Long division? I can't even remember how to do that shit...

i'd say holland was one of the best profs i had in university.

just remember that if you're stuck in your class with a prof who has a sweedish accent, just find another 211 class with a better prof and sit in so you can understand what the heck is being said.

it's the second week of class, you don't want to fall behind because of a useless prof.

Is 211 the new 221?

If so, I had Nicholson and he was one of the worst profs ever. His textbook was his lecture script :whipped:

211 was the non-engg version
they got rid of 221 and combined

Eleanor, did he actually just bring the textbook and read from it? Wow, publish a book and you're immortal
