Never really been to a official poker place to play poker..
not sure where is a good place to start. Not a crazy player who plays high blinds.

I saw at this casino where it is 5 bucks to play a tournament + 1 buck entry fee?

Any good suggestions would be great...dont mind the newb question..

No limit or limit, really depends on the minimum buy in and blinds

There are 5 dollar poker tournaments right? or did i read something wrong? If i did what is the tournments like? how do you sign up and what kind of entry fees have you guys played?

Edmonton is way better in terms of tournaments but i know every wednesday calgary casino has a tournament at 7:30. And deerfoot has a morning tourney at 10:30 or somthing and a night one at 10 most nights. plus from what i hear deerfoot has way better progressive if you get quads, s flush and royal flush.

Elbow for Limit
Deerfoot for NL and PL primarily but sometimes 4/8
Cash (Blackfoot) for NL/PL and tourneys
Calgary Casino (ABS) primarily for limit but NL and PL as well
Grey Eagle for NL/PL and limit

I don't play much live, but know that gray eagle casino has a $30+3 tourny (27-30) player max... every day in the morning...

Gray Eagle also has a bunch of 1/2NL tables with a deep buyin.. They also play a table of 4/8limit and high stakes games...

ABS - Blackfoot has a tourny that is $20 and it starts at 7:30 on weds.. they used to have a $20 tourny at 1PM, but im not sure if it still is on ( www.abscalgary.com )

Elbow River - I'm not sure if they have any tournys, but all they have in the poker room is 4/8 limit.. and a 15/30 or 30/60 limit game.. there is NO NL games...

Stampede - I'm not sure about the tournys they run, but I know they have a very nice poker room, and usually have a bucnh of 1/2NL tables going that are pretty bad...

wow i see..

what is PL? (newb again)
And for tournament, is there any specific sign up, or first come first serve basis? And you pretty much need to beat EVERYONE to win the pot?

hmm gotta find out more exact details on time and dates of 20 dollar poker tourneys, i like playing poker for the game, not so much for winning cash or gambling high

PL is pot limit
I work at Deerfoot. If you wanna try a small tourny then head on over. We have a tourny every morning at 10:30 AM. It's $40 Mon-Thur and $60 Fri-Sun. Weekdays we get about 2 tables and more on weekends. It's a pretty good crowd for beginners. Includes a free breakfast haha.
To sign up just call 723-4039 an hour before or just show up. We don't cap the amount of players so you should always have a seat. As for prize payout it depends on how many players. For about 20 players I usually pay out top 3. A lot of times they just chop it.
For cash game I would suggest you start with Limit unless you prefer No Limit. For Limit head to Elbow and play 4/8.
Any other questions just PM me

The $5+1 you're referring to is Grey Eagle's beginner tournament. That happens on Sundays at 2pm (maybe 1pm).

If you're looking at tournaments;
Cash Casino has nightly tournaments I think they start at 7:30 and are $45 buy-in (I've never played in one at Cash).
Grey Eagle 2 tournaments running daily, though they've changed slightly in the last month and a bit. They still have the $30 noon tournament everyday, that hasn't changed. But now, Sunday through Thursday, they have the $50+5+5 add-on at 8pm. And Friday and Saturday is a $150 tournament. IMO, these are one of the better daily tournaments because you get a bigger starting stack.
Stampede just started their daily tournaments this week. They start at 11am, but I can't remember what the buy in is. I think it's $30? Also, the Sunday tournaments are somehow 'football-related'.
Deerfoot also has an 11am tournament.

As for Cash games;
Stampede is where I spend most of my time. It's a very nice poker room, mostly with $1/2 NL. On Friday nights, depending on demand, they also start a $2/5 NL game. And on most nights, the high stakes guys come in and play a $10/25 DC or Omaha game.
Cash Casino is the only other poker room I've seen that plays another game that's not Holdem on a regular basis. They quite often have PL games, but also DC and HORSE.
As far as I know, Elbow doesn't have tournaments, and they mostly stick to limit games.
I haven't been to ABS in a really long time, so I have no idea what they play anymore. But the last time I went, they had mostly $4/8 and one $1/2 game.

Yeah the $165 tourny? It's a hit or miss. We have a new poker manager and I'm not sure if he's gonna keep it. I always get a few guys calling in asking about it but that's about it.

However, we just started our Monday Night Football Tournament. It's $100 ($85+$15) and starts at 6:30 PM. I believe for the first one we have a little over 60 players. It's a point system kinda thing where at the end of the season the player with the most points wins a trip for 2 to the Pro Bowl in Hawaii. Still a cash prize pool though. I don't remember the exact details on points but there's points for knocking out bountys, paid places and attendance.

sl888 - is the prize pool at deerfoot fair? In the 85+15, is the 85 ACTUALLY all contributed to the pool?

I know in the past, Cash Casino has ripped off the players SO badly. They would charge 50+6 and only about 38-40 of the 50 would go towards the prize pool. What an absolute joke. Sure, they can still attract the idiots with this kind of treatment but they're never going to get solid regular poker players in there to play their ripoff tournament.

I have yet to find a good, fair tournament in the city.

Cash games on the other hand, the city has a pretty solid representation (these could've changed recently as I haven't played live in a couple months)

Grey Eagle - 1/2 NL with a deep buy in.
Deerfoot - 1/2 NL with regular buy in
ABS - 4/8 LIMIT, 1/2 NL on occasion with reg. buy in
Cash - 1/2 NL with reg buy in

ABS on Barlow/16th has a good rebuy tournament, I think it's $20 and then $10 rebuys. It used to be Wednesday nights, but call them and ask. It's a ton of fun. And from what I could tell, the payout was pretty fair.

Yes $85 does go into the prize pool. I just heard about Cash thing recently. They take an additional $125 from their afternoon and evening tournament to help their budget. It's absolutely ridiculous.

I enjoy Deerfoot Casino.

$40 plus a free breakfast on week days
$60 plus a free breakfast on weekends.

The only thing I don't like is they are not consistent with how many positions pay.

Cash Casino is a shit hole, if you like hanging out with losers and well losers...LOL Cash Casino is your place.

I haven't tried Grey Eagle yet.

We stopped by the new Stampede Casino and it looks nice, but no tourny style games yet. Just cash.

That's probably me haha. Our structure isn't the greatest. I think it's pointless to pay a place when it's under or a little over your buy-in. So I just get rid of it and add it to the others.

Sounds good. Free beer or wings whenever your team scores a touchdown.
