I am looking at buying a new laptop. The laptop has an Intel Celeron 575 (Merom-based technology).

My current laptop has an Intel Core 2 Duo 1.4ghz processor.

I have heard that the Celeron would outperform my current processor. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Going by spec, I'm not so sure.

Celeron 575
1 core, 2Ghz, 667Mhz bus, 1MB cache

Core 2 Duo L7300
2 cores, 1.4Ghz, 800Mhz bus, 4MB cache (2/core)

So depends on the app, sounds like a draw to me.

Celeron = garbage. Honestly, if you're going to get a new laptop, save a little longer and get something with a new Core 2 Duo. Avoid Celerons, as they are pretty damn slow and will not last you very long before you decide that you have to buy a new laptop again.

And in that comparison, it's not a draw - not even close. The Core 2 Duo has 2 cores, versus 1 for the Celeron, and that's the biggest thing. Higher bus speed and more cache just make it that much better.

The higher bus speed and larger cache will more than make up the speed difference, and we aren't even getting in to the different architectures here, or the fact that the core 2 has a second core. The celeron is OLD technology, cycle for cycle it is a much slower processor than the core 2. You'd be throwing your money away.

More worth-while upgrades are faster HDDs (SSD anybody?) and more ram if you want to upgrade your current laptop, or find one with a faster core 2 processor. It all depends what you use it for, for all I know you're trying to do extensive gaming on it and all of this advice is for shit.

Actually, the processor I currently have is a T5270, 1.4GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache

Does this change anything? Is my core2duo still better than the newer tech celeron?

I didnt know they still sold laptops with that garbage. For the price of a laptop now a days why would you even consider a celeron.

i had the unfortunate experience of using a celeron processor when i went to sait and in my last company...

Although it does change things a little bit, your current processor is still faster by a mile.
