Currently I'm using 2.5" exhaust piping. Would I need to change my whole exhaust set up if I decided to go to 3" downpipe?

no, you dont have to as you can have the piping scale down from 3" to 2.5". however, if youre outflowing your 2.5" piping, you may want to upgrade it all anyway.

Downpipe doesn't always mean it has to be on a boosted car to be called a downpipe. It's a generic term.

that looks more like a mid pipe to me, on n/a you have a header off the engine, and turbo you have a turbo to down pipe... that is how i have always seen it

id also imagine the fact that this is in the "Forced Induction Talk" section would be a fairly good clue ...

there's no point in going 3" dp if you have a 2 1/2" exhaust restricting any flow you would gain

so no you don't have to change your whole setup but youd be stupid not to

Exhaust gases take up less volume as they cool, but I'm not sure a downpipe would facilitate enough cooling to allow use of a 2.5" system without restriction.
How much power is the car making?
