Is it too hard for you to copy and paste?

EDIT - Read "Please copy and paste because some people behind proxies can't view certain links."

:D Smoking thread got me a little upset this morning, plus stupid drivers in the morning. Plus I'm behind a proxy with lets me view about 5 different websites, ultimately hindering my performance to be able to search educational websites on programming issues I'm having with various custom internal applications. Most of my posts aren't meant as sarcastic as they sound. Seriously.

Forum Find: Custom MR2 with the Ultimate Car-Puter

Posted Sep 11th 2008 7:59PM by Damon Lavrinc
Filed under: Aftermarket, Gadgets, Etc., Tech, Toyota

Click above for a massive gallery of the MR2 Carputer

Upon first inspection, MR2forum.de member LaroCroft's second-generation (SW20) Toyota MR2 is simply a tastefully modded example of a cult favorite. However, peer inside and all preconceived notions are immediately thrown out the targa top.

Any "For Sale" thread that requires "Knowledge in electronics, skills in PC technology and knowledge of programming (especially Visual Basic)" is a clear indication that things inside have gotten thoroughly out of hand. Just check out the gallery and you'll see what we're talking about.

The entire instrument cluster and center console have been replaced with three screens displaying every conceivable function and parameter of the MR2's systems. The trio of displays are controlled by either a touch screen interface or a center console-mounted knob (ala iDrive), and allows the drive to manipulate everything from fuel consumption to engine temp; climate control to GPS functions; mirrors, radar/laser, the wireless transfer of music from a home computer, lights, fog lights, and on and on and on.

It's pure insanity and incredibly cool. And the best part: it's for sale in Germany – assuming you've got the programming chops to actually leave your driveway.

Likely running Roadrunner or Centrifuse if he's saying you need knowledge of VB. They're written in old VB Script though, I was hoping someone would do a rewrite for .NET. Does it say anything about how he is controlling the HVAC system? Serial port? Any mention of the software he's using to manage that? Carputer hardware specifications? Sounds like he's got a lot of USB items running there so I'd be interested in knowing how he's managing all the extra USB ports and the extra loads on the 5 volt rail. Sunlight readable LCD? Appears to be from the single photo. I wonder which video card he's using to spin the screen like that, interesting design. Does it say if he's using Car2PC or Fusion Brain for the lighting system?

Gives me a few ideas for mine.

Just add some powered USB hubs with 7805's or another 5v source, I'm sure he's not using a measly carputer "mini psu".

Yeah the displays definitely look transflective mmm nice :D

Then you've got so many wires from the different hubs going to your battery. Although from the description it sounds like he's got a second battery for the system. He's also runnin HVAC control as well as OBD but both go through serial.....and most computers only come with a single serial port, I wonder if he's using a serial-USB converter somehow. And which software is he running for diagnostic parsing? Must make a trip over to mp3car.com and see if they know more....

Aside from the obvious carputer thing. Anyone else notice the awesome job of the interior wrapped all in suede?

Very nice setup. My only suggestion would be wrap that white dash in a nice glossy black material and a smaller, better looking steering wheel so you can actually see the whole dash screen.
