Ok, I need to take the woman out for her birthday next week. I need some good creative ideas on where to take her. I'm thinking something higher end, but that still has a semi-casual feel to it. Here are some requirements.

She really likes good food. I mean really good food. This is the most important thing I'm looking for.

A cool atmosphere would be awesome.

Good service would be nice.

Something close to the beltline/ downtown would be good as well.

Bonus points for a non-traditional type of meal. Like some sort of fusion dishes as opposed to the traditional Italian or Greek or whatever.

I'm not worried about prices so throw me what you've got. Thanks bro's.

Catch, Saltlik, Wild Ginger, Red Water are great places to eat.

These are all decent. Catch is the best of the four.

If you want a truly cool experience and GREAT non-conventional food, hit up River Cafe near Eau Claire.

I can't say enough about this place that hasn't already been said, so just search it on chowhound to check out reviews.

Or search river cafe on this site and check out a couple of the threads that mention it.

I went to Saltlik last friday and I thought it was mediocre at best and the server we had wasn't exactly the best (but maybe i'm just picky). I've had a better server at Red Lobsters on 16th LOL

+1 River Cafe

If any of you have been to the Trough in Canmore, this is her favorite place. So that's more or less what I'm trying to shoot for, except without having to go to Canmore lol.

Thanks for all your efforts so far.

Edit: Also, we won't be showing up until 10, so late hours are a MUST!!

Wild Ginger is overpriced and overrated. Typical Vickers Penny Lane establishment.

Have you considered Olives? It is in the base of the Arriva condos.

How much you willing to spend?

Muse Restaurant in Kensington is one of my personal favorites.

CAPO in Inglewood is good Italian food.

Sugo in Inglewood is great food and a good couples atmosphere.

Olives in Arriva is great food and a nice contemporary atmosphere.

Catch is decent, if you want seafood.

But if you're in it for the food and nothing else, you can't beat Bookers. haha. Great food there.

The Living Room is a GREAT place for a date, one of the only places in Calgary that does a fondue type dinner.

After reading your request I would recommend Alloy.

http://www.alloydining.com/

It has a good vibe, very good food, AND the prices are not ridiculous like some of the other higher end establishments in Calgary.

Honestly, places like River Cafe, Teatro, and even Capo are over-rated. I don't mind dropping some cash on a good meal but in this town the $100+/person bills doesn't ensure you good food or good service.

I just came back from the US and wow do those people know how to run restaurants. I guess they've been working at it longer and the customers MUST be smarter. Calgarians have too much money and patience.

Under a grand?!?

Shiat NEGRO...I know Calgary is expensive but we're not in Manhattan.

If you are going to feed this chick a $500 dinner than there better be some hardcore knob-gobblin' going on!

Please please please please don't go there.

Unless after 3 executive chefs they have finally gotten the menu right. Haven't been there since it opened. But then it was horrible.

Go with Alloy. I've heard great things about it.
