Hi,

Does anyone know if a bank (ie: BMO, TDCT, CIBC, RBC) will give references or only confirm the length of time employed and position? I`m currently employed at a bank.

Thanks!

wouldn't it be better to ask the bank that you're employed at?

Why don't you ask them? They should know best.

ask your branch manager for a reference.

Are you still working there?

Might not be such a good idea to ask for a reference.

"Hey, can you tell this company that wants to steal me from you how great I am?"

Yeah still working there so I don't want to make it awkward....yet.

be honest with him, if your not and they call, do you think he will give you a good review if you didn't let him know you were leaving?

how about tell your new place you are still there and aren't comfortable giving a reference to that place.

they will understand

All you say is that you would like a letter of reference, you just say what you need. They'll usually be more than happy to accomodate you.
If they ask why you need it, all you have to say is that you want to move on with your career and explore new things.

What the OP is referring to are standard procedures. Banks like HSBC will not give out references. They will only confirm that you worked there from this date...to this date, and what your final position was. Is that a common banking practice across the board?

Tell them you are renting a new place, or signing up for something like big brothers and need a reference. ha

Ummm. You can get a written reference that has no contact info. Normally a formal letter written explaining what you do, how long you were there. Etc. Throw on a company logo so it looks pretty, signed by someone important... Some large companies don't want to be bothered by people calling them all the time, and if you use the reference years from now an employer may not even remember you, so at least you have a copy of it.. I have the letters and pdf files from large previous employers.
