The girlfriend's looking for a car, I was thinking about some of the newer VWs, probably a Beetle or a Golf. I remember an ad for a VW that claimed to get like 1000 km on a full tank of gas. Does anyone know which one it was?

Yes Turbo Diesel Injection - TDI. Obviously not gas though. Quite reliable and great fuel economy. Diesel is cheap and the engine is more efficient.

yep, we've done it also.

30 bucks to fill up, and fill up once every 3-4 weeks...and the nice thing is these cars actually have some balls.

my mom has a 01 Golf TDI, she can get 1100 highway km's to a tank. There are preformace kits available for those cars as well.

of course those numbers will change with a kit

stock 220 ft/lbs of torque is rediculous though...

that can take many cars off the line no prob

if its a stick, autos are pretty slow....well just compared to the rest of the VW line i guess, but a standard TDI is faster than a auto gas 2.0.

TDI and then the 2.0L comes in second place.

The Golf is only 80lbs lighter then the Jetta... get a TDI Golf.

Thanks alot for the info. So TDI eh..
How is the reliability of these cars? I'm not talking just Engine, but tranny, clutch life, brake life etc, I know it's a lot of questions and I'm sorry but I've never owned a VW before, only Hondas and now the RX-7.
Is there a TDI verson for the Beetle?
I guess I can look that up myself.
Thanks

Yes you can get the TDI in the Beetle. The brakes longevity is dependent on how you drive -- same with the tranny and clutch. Generally everything works well!

Mk4's have a tendency of having rear brakes that wear excessively quickly, I don't know if this is just on the 1.8t though. But it would be something to look into. I know some people that had to get their whole rear brake setup replaced at 40k, i had to replace mine at 75k.

How much does a new Golf TDI go for taxes in etc.? I'm starting to no longer care about this nice car thing. I rather spend it on something else more worthwhile.

TDI is not a noisy truck diesel. Standing beside a running one, you'd be hard pressed to tell the diff.

I'd get a jetta wagon TDI over a golf personally. The Jetta is Betta.

VWs have stupid problems like O2 sensors, windows regulators, etc - it's rare that it's a major thing like a tranny. HOWEVER - they do have character. They will creak, and rattle and you can spend hours rattle hunting. But like I said - it's character. :)

I love my car.

that would be a 2.0 litre. TDI's hold their value well.

To check out reliability, do a search on NHTSA - National Highway Traffic and Safety.
It's a US website but it gives a good indication of what is out on the road - it's made me re-think my next purchase......
