"Apparently this lady interprets her Religion to say that she must treat this as a normal child."

So even if she had a normal dead baby shed carry it around and dress it up?

Going through a misscarriage is really hard... one of the ways people mourn for their baby is to actually dress them up before they bury them. Granted, usually it's into the 3rd trimester and not that early...

As sad as it is, what this lady did is a bit disturbing.

I dont begrudge her healing process (though I can't say that would be my method of healing). However I do find it rather disturbing that she has involved her other children in this ritual as well. They look old enough to possibly remember it some day, and I can't see it sitting particularly well with them as they get older and realize that they were holding the very undeveloped no longer living body of their sibling :(

So I work in an emergency department, where we occassionally see miscarriages of pretty well formed fetus' <20 weeks. Some parents have no desire to see the fetus while others, yes like this woman, DO want to see the fetus, hold it, put clothes on it etc. We have little kits with tiny little hats, sweaters etc, a in a little box.

Many families do this - regardless of religion.

It's a pretty strange looking thing (the fetus) for sure, but it is way more dignity to do this, then have the fetus thrown in the sink in bucket and sent up to pathology (like has been done by some residents)!

Also, we've seen miscarriages where the fetus does come out still breathing, parents do not want to see it, and pull a person out of their stretcher to put the fetus in and have staff or pastoral care stay with it until it dies

Its probably not that unusual at all. I remember reading on another forum some post mentioning a miscarriage but the patient was sent home and the fetus was removed 3 weeks later. Guys cried bloody murder but eventually the facts turn up that its pretty normal operating procedure and most women don't mind it and actually prefer it than just getting rid of the fetus immediately.

I don't understand how it is a miscarriage if it comes out breathing. do you mean abortion?

i think when a baby comes out before it's supposed to, it's a miscarriage, but i'm no expert

Yeah, women have the choice to either let the products of conception pass naturally as mentioned above or a have a "D & C" (Dilation and curettage) performed which is the surgical removal of uterine products.

I was actually talking about surgical removal, but since it isn't a life-threatening procedure they schedule it a few weeks later. People got all up in arms that they'd let a woman walk around with a dead fetus for a few weeks but some women came on after and said it was normal and many actually prefer it as it gives them a time to mourn. Bottom line, women and 20-something shut-in males (mid teens in the case of beyond) don't have similar views on the topic.

A baby isn't considered "viable" (able to live on it's own after being born) until at least 24 weeks into a pregnancy. Even then it's not really a sure thing. If the baby comes out before that or even after, but it's still not healthy enough, it probably won't make it, even if it comes out breathing. If a woman's water breaks, they pretty much have to deliver the baby, or else it puts the mother at a HUGE risk for serious infection. There's also a few other situations where something like that would happen/need to be done. So no, not really the same thing as abortion at all, it wouldn't be a choice to have this done, it would be a matter of emergency.
