Volkswagen will be revealing the next-generation version of the Golf GTI, one of the most acclaimed hot hatches on the market, at next week’s Paris Motor Show but some images of the car have already leaked online. As expected, its styling remains similar to the previous model and is differentiated mostly by a new front bumper design. The Mark VI Golf platform is the basis for the GTI update and, like its more mundane companions, the GTI is an evolutionary step forward, not overly different to its predecessor. Reports suggest the new car will be powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine good for 210hp (157kW).

that new GTI kind of reminds me an EK hatch.

Don't know what they'll call it but AWD 270hp Turbo engine is the rumour. 7 speed DSG too.

As far as price, who knows. Probably somewhere in the STI range is my guess. Unless they too want it to "compete" with BMW 335i

The Scirocco wont be coming to canada.

Sorry to cross link but here is the REAL PICS and specs on the new GTI. It does have the 210hp scirocco engine.

I'm not loving the new front end but I'll reserve judgement until I see one live. The interior though is amazing for the price range.

The interior isn't THAT big of a change from the MKV. A little more chrome over a slightly updated design. The positions of everything's the same it looks like.

Anyone else hate those gaudy seats? :barf:

Aleks

I think the seats are awsome. I would still go for leather option though.

Ugh, put some plastic on them and they'll look like they'd fit right into my grandmother's living room :barf:

I'm not a huge fan of the new curvy styling of the Golf/Rabbit/GTi. I much prefer the boxy styling of the MKI/II/III/IV

Yes it looks almost the same but that's a good thing because no car in the price range has an interior that rivals it in quality.

very nice looking car. imo, this model is clearly a step ahead of the MKV in terms of exterior styling

Ya, I'm not a big fan of the plaid interior myself, which is why I opted for leather on my MKV. A lot of hardcore VW fans love them because they're basically really nice versions of the original GTI plaid seats.

The curvy look definately strays from the original's look. The big difference between the MKIV and older platforms compared to the MKV is the handling. It's a HUGE improvement with the MKV.

Yeah, but hardcore VW fans can't really be trusted with their taste.

A few days late on this one...

http://www.motorauthority.com/report-volkswagen-working-on-golf-gti-plus-and-r42.html

MK6 just got better. GTI is just the entry level performance Golf.

GTI Plus (GTI-R) - AWD, 2.0T, 270hp, 7 speed DSG. Targets 135i, Audi S3

Golf R42 - AWD, 2.5T, 350hp, 7 speed DSG. Targets (my guess) STI, evo, etc.

I say this every time, but as fast as these new dual-clutch setups can shift I like rowing through the gears manually. Otherwise pretty interesting direction VW is taking this. 350hp in a Golf, that's the stuff.

hmm....i just read that the 0-60 time is 7.2 seconds

I don't place too much importance on numbers, but that doesn't really scream performance, and as nice as the mk VI looks, it doesn't sound like its gonna be as exciting of a drive

very sexy ride  that interior is amazing imo

scirrocco won't come to canada; at least for a while. I could predict that the introduction of the scirrocco in canada would damage GTI sales which are surprisingly not that high for its market demographic.

AWD GTI in canada.... finally i hope...

It's a GTI, not a GTR .

That 0-60 time is on par with every other 200hp cheap sporty car such as the Civic Si.

I doubt we'll ever see the R42 in Canada. Best we can hope for is the GTI AWD one.

I am happy with how quick my GTI is. 97 mph trap up here is pretty decent.

Hmm damn I wonder if NA will get these and what the pricing will be like. I'm considering picking up an '08 GTI, but might have to hold off depending on how this plays out.

Now that the bumper laws are harmonized, we'll see them here for sure.

The US might not even get it though with the 2009 R32 not being available in the US. I am still hoping for the scirocco with the latest rumors, but one of those new gtis would do fine.

rage2

The reason there's no 2009 R32 is because the MK6 is out for 2009. The 2008 R32 is already a slow seller from the slowing economy, nobody will buy a 2009 MKV R32 with MK6 GTI's on the lot.

The rules will allow it but how much would a 300+hp AWD GTI cost in Canada.

08s are all sold out. 09s are on the lots now.

They have a story on it here:
http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/28/no-2009-volkswagen-r32-for-the-u-s/
The 09 will be in europe for the r32, but they are getting the MKVI in 09, we will probably see it in 2010, but the 09's wouldnt sell as much so as the 08, at least it keeps it an exclusive car.

When I was looking for an 08 for a friend I was told by all the Calgary dealers there were none left in Calgary so they had one brought in from GP for her. This was 2 months ago.

They are for sale now in europe so they always get it first, then after a couple years we will get it, and of course the reliablity will be excellent because of the time it spent out in europe prior to the north american release:nut:
