no no no this thread needs to be about sleeper picks...we all know the obvious picks ie)ovech, crosby, iginla etc. doesnt really make a difference who you pick because they're all going to do amazing...

we need to discuss sleeper picks because we all know these are the ones that win pools...ie)backstrom of capitals(got him last round of the draft last year) , kovalev to an extent (got him in the 10th round last year) etc.

so who does everyone have as their sleeper picks this year

Fantasy pools tend to be current players...

you won't win many pools with retired players.
A few years ago, one of my friends picked Probert as his enforcer after he was retired. Last year, same guy picked Selanne, Niedermayer and Numminen

Lanny MacDonald
Hakan Loob
Jim Peplinski
Joe Neuiendyk
Joe Mullen
Rob Ramage
Al MacInnis
Joel Otto
Tim Hunter

Mike Vernon - scratch that - dark horse - Rick Wamsley

Sorry '08s this probably makes no sense

Almost all fantasy leagues won't EVER let you pick half the perennial top 10 point-getters on the same team... everyone would all have the same players, points, etc.

I agree with dezmarez... it's all about the sleepers. The top 10 is way too obvious.

Is Matthew Lombardi a good sleeper pick?

Exactly, everyone knows Ovenchkin, Crosby, Iginla, Zetterberg ect. will do good.

No I don't think Lombardi will be much of a sleeper pick, 50 points at most. Flames have too many centers for him to do anything.

Here are a few of my sleeper picks:

#1 Patrice Bergeron
#2 Lubomir Visnovsky
#3 Shawn Horcoff
#4 Ales Hemsky
#5 Mathieu Garon
#6 Joe Sakic
#7 Alex Tanguay
#8 Tomas Plekanec
#9 Milan Hejduk

All of these guys are rated pretty low in yahoo, not sure about other places. I think these guys will get you way more than what you pay for.

the best place to look for sleepers are younger players who just had 40-50 pt seasons in their 2nd or 3rd season while playing their team's top 6, they are quite often headed for glory in the following season: patrick o'sullivan, jussi jokinen, either kostitsyn, drew stafford are my picks this year...quite often these types of picks go hand in hand with knowing line combinations, rj umberberger will do well with nash/huselius if they manage to play together

or for players who were injured/or had a really shitty season prior: havlat is always great for the 30-40 games you'll have him for, nylander this year, cheechoo, marleau, michael ryder, patrice bergeron, even sakic was a bit of a sleeper this year as he fell pretty far down the yahoo rankings

bobby ryan in anaheim may be a great sleeper

^^^^ He would indeed be a great sleeper, as nobody truly expects him to do squat.

Steven Stamkos
Matt Carle
Teemu Selanne
Todd Bertuzzi
Max Afinegenov
Niklas Kronwall
Pascale Leclair
Valterri Filppula
Bobby Ryan
Craig Rivet
Shawn Horcoff
David Clarkson

Like others have said the top 10 picks are a no brainer. Hell even the top 30 picks aren't much work. It's the late round picks that will win pools.

My sleeper picks:

- Dustin Byfyglien
- Matt... eeer Hot Carle (yes finally this year)
- Chris Letang (it's his PP now)
- Jiri Hudler (should be on the 2nd line with Zeterman)
- Nik Kronwall
- Peter Mueller (not really a sleeper pick)
- Joe Pavalski
- Marek Svatos
- Sergei Samsonov

And yes obviously player that didn't play much will improve their point totals. Sakic, Bergeron, Gagne, etc etc.

Some other guys to look out for IMO for big point increases are:
- Naslund, Gomez & Drury (if they play together)
- Cheechoo (he can't get any worse lol)
- Marleau
- Afinogenov
- Vanek
- Lupul
- Camillari
- Satan (duh)

(either of) the Sedins. Perennial 70+ pts. Daniel would probably be preferable since their are more talented c's than lw'ers, if position is enforced in your pool.
I picked up Henrik in the last round of my fantasy draft (admittedly a pretty small pool)

Alex Goligoski on the Pens is now THE sleeper pick.

He's gonna be running the PP with Gonchar and Whitney out.... good thing I just grabbed him in our yahoo pool :D

Henrik's the C and Daniel's the LW.

I think Kris Letang will still be the number one PP D man

Yes, that's my point, that Daniel would be a marginally better pick since there are more talented C's around than LW'ers, so a 70pt LW'er is worth more than a 70pt C.

rumor has it he was assigned to Iowa on the AHL .... he should prolly return once they clear up cap space, its a matter of when.

My sleepers (after hours of research on company time :P):
Patrick Marleau (underachieved last year)
Mikko Koivu (will get 70ish points playing top line center)
Phil Kessel (top line and healthy, will get more points then last season)
Ryan Smyth (look for him to get 70 points this season if healthy)
Steve Bernier (playing with sedins on top line)
Teemu Selanne (signed 2 year deal and will contribute large as usual)
Simon Gagne (if healthy will put up 75+ points)
Ryan Clowe (because of injury last season u may be able to get him in later rounds, had an amazing 07-08 playoffs)
Patrice Bergeron (should return to form with 70-80 points)
Brendan Morrison (healthy and on a new team, give him 55+ points)
Sergei Samsonov (playing on first line should boost his point production)

Depending on how deep your picks go look to grab these players in later rounds:
Fabian Bruunstron (undrafted potential future star, risky but could get 40 points or more)
Kyle Okposo (top line rookie, if he stays there he could get 50+ points)
Derek Brassard (rumored to be centering nash and huselius)
James Sheppard (Better linemates in nolan and brunette, should get more then 19 points he had last year)
Martin Havlat (injury risk always but a point per game player when healthy)

those are my forwards anyways ... I have Defence, goalie and PIM producers as well but im too lazy to post

hells naw.
he put up 79points playing with a relatively healthy foppa, no way in hell briere can turn him into a 100+ point player.
gagne is a pure goal scorer, he's more likely to get 50goals than 100+ points.
i think his ceiling would be like... 50g/40a/90p season, that's if he can stay healthy.

We did a live draft for our hockey team's pool this year. Everyone had their sports mags and stats books out trying to get the 10th-15th round sleepers:rofl:
Obviously the big names went from the 1st to 9th rounds.

My actual pool:
Redden, Wade
Knuble, Mike
Brunette, Andrew
Vrbata, Radim
Bouchard, Pierre-Marc
Zherdev, Nikolai
Kaberle, Tomas
Boyes, Brad
Plekanec, Tomas
Morrow, Brenden
Naslund, Markus
Roy, Derek BUF
Alfredsson, Daniel
Lecavalier, Vincent
G Miller, Ryan

So far i'm second, hahahaha

I need Boyes and and Roy to pull through, I wasted some pretty early picks on them trying to stategize.
its all about the east this year and most of our draft had eastern conf. players go first.
