That's sweet.
Alot of traffic in Europe and Japan at first, then everything transfers to North America slowly.

Yes Sherlock, thanks for stating the obvious.

I couldn't stop watching the lonely ones, so strange seeing lots of traffic and then one dot traversing an area with no other objects.

That's a pretty '08-esque post for someone that's been on beyond longer than most. You get this as your reward!

Would it be fair to assume that you're 2nd from the right?

Good find to the OP, too bad we have too many people spewing shitty haterade. At least my haterade is funny haterade. Such as the haterade towards you. Ass clown.

I wish I was on one of those flights, then I could say "hey see that dot going to the middle of nowhere... that's me!"

Planes that go over the poles. Their speed is increased as a result of the fact that a round sphere is being projected as a flat object. The size of the top (the poles) is exaggerated greatly meaning they are traversing a large distance on the map, but a relatively short distance in reality, with time being a constant.

EDIT: Also to clarify, the distances at the equator will be the least skewed, with the distortion increasing as you near the poles:

It's just the perspective that makes it look fast. In some cases, to get to China or Russia, it's way faster to go straight over the pole rather than hop across the Atlantic or Pacific.

Ahh makes sense. I thought this was an actual flat representation of the earth so I was thinking fighter jets or something haha.

http://science.nasa.gov/Realtime/JTrack/3D/JTrack3D.html

here's another 'flight tracker' a teacher showed us for a GPS project when i 'served my time' at SAIT aerospace center

basically set the timing to real time and click on any satellite, goto satellite-select and find the name of the satellite then hit info,
it will tell you a basic description of what that satellite's function is,
stuff like where it was launched, when, who does it belong to.
They range from military, meteorological, communications, nav (like your in-car Garmins) all the way to Chinese and Russian... spy sattelites ?

supposedly this realtime flash anim. only shows a handful of the actual satellites really orbiting Earth, kinda creepy to know that there are prlly 10X more out there watching our every move some of which are never to be known to anyone other than military types etc..
